Connelly is the very best at writing the ideal hard-boiled detective story. Harry Bosch is beloved for a reason. In this book, there is not just one but two mysteries to unravel. My only problem with the book is I couldn't make it last. I couldn't hit stop on my iPod. The plot, characters and setting are believable and right on target. I just wish Connelly could write faster. I can never get enough of Harry Bosch.
And Len Cariou is wonderful as the narrator. Bosch is the only character where 2 different narrators (Dick Hill and Cariou) can perform him equally as well.
If this is your first Bosch book, wait and listen to others first as there is great backstory in those.
Wow, this was slow. This is supposed to be a "thriller" but there is no thrill with the pace at which this moves. It is plodding and a bit boring. Dialogue is believable and well written but everything moves slowly and almost "gently." Not what I was looking for at all. I prefer the writings of Laura Lippman, Michael Connelly, Jussi Adler Olsen, Robert Crais and many others. Not putting Ann Cleaves on my list. However, if you like cozy mysteries, this would likely fit the bill.
I typically listen to mysteries and thrillers but this was my second McKinty. The story is very well told and the narration was just perfect. However, the story, characters and happenings are dark and the action is vivid. There are no mysteries here but I knew that going in. The whole book is built around what happens to a particular Irish man in NY and how he deals with it. McKinty can weave quite a bit of "poetry" into his writing which makes it sound very nice but does not really move things along. If you like any McKinty, you will like this.
I have listened to the first four Dept Q books and this one is my favorite. I thought the suspense was maintained very well throughout the book. It was also a bit more believable a plot that 1, 2 and 4. Characters are well thought out and dialogue is good. Great twists throughout the book without the story going off the rails. Good action scenes also.
Please read some or all of the previous Harry Hole books as they provide important background that makes this one all the better. This one has the most twists, turns and hold-your-breath moments of any of Nesbo's others. Virtually un-pause-able.
Narrator does a good job - gets better as he goes.
Yes. Glenister is the best narrator I have heard in many years. Nails every character perfectly.
Yes - everything everyone does adds to the equation slowly but surely. Character development is believable and enjoyable. The murder itself is fascinating and what develops before and after, equally so. Rowling is so good!
Everything. He's clearly read the text before he speaks it and knows just what to do and when and how. He is an artist. Nothing comical. Easily takes on dialects, different ages, etc. Can't be beat.
A world class murder mystery by JK Rowling (just to get people in the door) or "Something wicked is awake in London."
I can't wait for the next in the series. Write faster, JK! If you like a LOT of action, adventure and chase scenes like a James Bond movie, this book might not be for you.
Very clear cut. If you need someone to simply tell you what to do and why in a no nonsense manner, Mellen is great.
Please know this book is almost useless unless you WORK through it and do most everything he says. It's not advice, it is step by step procedures. In a weird way it is like listening to a cook book. I have not finished the book as I intend to go back to certain chapters like The Kitchen and follow as I work.
It's a work book, similar to a cook book for organizing.
Rosenfelt has never written the nitty gritty crime dramas that I have come to expect from other writers. He has written the funny, witty and nice murder mysteries that are the Andy Carpenter series. Stick with those. This book does NOT allow you to think of anything for yourself. For example if a character opens a door, the author will be sure to tell you he walked *through* the door. Except for some curse words, I think a 5th grader might even get insulted reading this book as it spells everything out. It's trite and lots of things are horribly contrived.
Removed any first person narrative. Not spelled out every detail - especially with the horrible habit of two verbs i.e. "we asked for AND requested a table." There is a lot of that in the book.
Nice timbre but except for 2-3 characters, they sound like cartoons.
no. However, if the same basic story were written by another writer it would probably be okay. Still it moves toward far fetched at the end.
LOVE Andy Carpenter but this fails.
small town suspects
Not quite the edge of my seat as there was not enough action to warrant that until certain parts of the book. However, the character development and flow of the plot was good. I liked the dialogue and thought it was realistic.
I enjoyed learning how the main character put all the clues together.
It used to be a quiet little town.
I am willing to listen to another in the series. I did like the narrator.
I totally love this series of books. It is a guilty pleasure but so perfectly done. The mysteries are fun and full of flavor. The characters have grown over the 8 books. Jeff Woodman is so talented he does every voice in a different and completely believable style. You will have no problem telling who is talking. He makes it all sound effortless.
Ceepak Mysteries are like your favorite dessert. You love seeing it in front of you and enjoy the anticipation. You love devouring it. And you are so sad when it's over.
Mr. Grabenstein, please write faster!
If you are looking for an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, this isn't it. If you are looking for a perfectly constructed murder mystery with fantastic characters and great narration, download this today. I was amazed at how involved I got with the story and the very believable characters. I certainly hope we see more of them in the future. The plot is perfectly paced too.
