With more than 52 million pet dogs in America today, it's clear we are a nation of unabashed dog lovers. Yet the relationship between dogs and humans remains a fascinating mystery, as no one really knows what goes on in the canine mind. Now, in Inside of a Dog, Alexandra Horowitz fuses her perspectives as both scientist and dog owner to deliver a fresh look at the world of dogs - as seen from the animal's point of view.

As a dog aficionado, I was very excited to listen to this audiobook but turned out to be quite disappointed when finished. The book is a series of interesting dog facts interspersed with the authors opinions on dog behavior/psychology/training. I've been around dogs my entire life and raised quite a few myself and I disagree with much of what the author says outside of her dog biology information. It seems she is basing much of her opninions from her interactions with her small, friendly dog. Anyone who's ever raised any of the large/dominant breeds of dogs will either get a good laugh from this book or will be thoroughly disgusted at having wasted the money.

You've either done it or know someone who has: the one-night stand, the familiar outcome of a night spent at a bar, sometimes the sole payoff for your friend's irritating wedding, or the only relief from a disastrous vacation. Often embarrassing and uncomfortable, occasionally outlandish, but most times just a necessary and irresistible evil, the one-night stand is a social rite as old as sex itself and as common as a bar stool.

    Story
What did you like best about My Horizontal Life? What did you like least?

The stories had the potential to be very funny but the narrator does not have Chelsea's personality or ability to deliver a joke or tell the story in the way Chelsea would have. It really detracted from the impact.
Chelsea make a huge mistake by not narrating this herself. There was no way someone else was going to present it as well as she could have.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Cassandra Campbell?

No one but Chelsea could pull this off and make it very funny. The narrator failed miserably.

  • Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Oprah's Book Club 2.0)

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

What did you like best about this story?

The honesty and insight into someone's very interesting life... and the adventure.

    Any additional comments?

This book really was "fascinating" for me to listen to, with both the positive and negative meanings that could imply. The author seems to be the opposite of me in many ways. She seems to think about things and react to things very differently than I would. I have certainly made my own mistakes in life and had my own adventures but in very different ways from the author. To me the story was an insight into a very different psyche. I really appreciated her honesty throughout the story and I enjoyed following along in her journey.

Anyone interested in the foundations of value investing and learning the basic principles that led Warren Buffett to make his fortune will find a lot to like about this book. The various investing techniques, insights into the market and special situation investing information make this an immensely valuable book. I've made a lot of money thanks to this one book. After reading and listening to it over 20 times I still pick up new information each time.
