  • Washington's Crossing

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By David Hackett Fischer
    • Narrated By Nelson Runger

This New York Times best seller is a thrilling account of one of the most pivotal moments in United States history. Six months after the Declaration of Independence, America was nearly defeated. Then on Christmas night, George Washington led his men across the Delaware River to destroy the Hessians at Trenton. A week later Americans held off a counterattack, and in a brilliant tactical move, Washington crept behind the British army to win another victory. The momentum had reversed.

    "Particularly Good Military History"

This is an excellent book for both the military historian and Revolutionary War buff. The author does an excellent job telling the untold story of the events of late 1776 through 1777, shattering popular beliefs about what happened leading up to, and immediately following the attack at Trenton. If you're interested in New Jersey history you will find this work particularly appealing, as it chronicles most of the engagements fought here during the revolution.

  • The Partly Cloudy Patriot

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Sarah Vowell
    • Narrated By Sarah Vowell, Conan O'Brien, Seth Green, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Sarah Vowell travels through the American past and investigates the dusty, bumpy roads of her own life. Her essays confront a wide range of subjects, icons, and historical moments: Ike, Teddy Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton; Canadian Mounties and German Filmmakers; Tom Cruise and Buffy the Vampire Slayer; twins and nerds; the Gettysburg Address, the State of the Union, and George W. Bush's inauguration. The result is an engrossing audiobook, capturing Vowell's memorable wit and her keen social commentary.

Politically, I didn't mind this book though the writer and I have differing political views. What was most irksome was this work's complete lack of structure. From the outset it bounces from an at times thoughtful discussion of historically significant places/occurrances like Gettysburg, to inane rants on completely disconnected topics, which the author either doen't attempt to, or completely fails to link together. The book was nothing of what I expected, which is good most of the time, but not this time.

The author/reader's voice is also extremely hard to endure.

  • American Soldier

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By General Tommy R. Franks, Malcolm McConnell
    • Narrated By Eric Conger

The Commander in Chief of the United States Central Command from July 2000 through July 2003, General Tommy Franks made history leading American and Coalition forces to victory in Afghanistan and Iraq, the decisive battles that launched the war on terrorism.

"A true insider's perspective on Iraq"

There is certainly a wide range of facts and opinions circulating regarding the USA's current engagement in Iraq. If this is a jugular issue for you this election, you owe it to yourself to listen to this book and get the perspective of someone who was actually there, as well as at the Pentagon, White House, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Pakistan. And the guy worked in the region for years, not just after 9/11. For instance, he was a commander during Desert Storm.

It's also an excellent book on leadership - I think he will be able to make a good living consulting to corporations on subjects such motivating employees to get results.
