The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

The melodramatic ending! Liked the beginning...and the descriptions of people were priceless, especially of the producer with his weird face, and the "milk fed veal". But overall, it was sort of predictable.

It was a "million-dollar bullet," a sniper shot delivered from over a mile away. Its victim was a United States citizen, targeted by the United States government, and assassinated in the Bahamas. The nation's most renowned investigator and forensics expert, Lincoln Rhyme, is drafted to investigate. As details of the case start to emerge, the he discovers that not all is what it seems. When a deadly, knife-wielding assassin begins systematically eliminating the witnesses, Lincoln's investigation turns into a chilling battle of wits against a cold-blooded killer.

I absolutely hate multiple narrators...it is always jarring and irritating...not at all more "realistic". In fact, sometimes I thought the voice of Sachs was Siri talking to me. Other than that, the story was pretty good.

The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

Rhonda Morrison says: "What a great book, Hildy is a great character!"

I loved this book, which was also very well narrated. The main character, Hildy, is wonderfully sympathetic, but also awful at the same time--kind of like a real person. The description of a town in transition also rings very true.

Jerene Jarvis Johnston and her husband, Duke, are exemplars of Charlotte, North Carolina’s high society, a world where old Southern money and the secrets behind it meet the new wealth of bankers, real estate speculators, and carpetbagging social climbers. Steely and implacable, Jerene presides over her family’s legacy of paintings at the Mint Museum; Duke, the one-time college golden boy and descendant of a Confederate general, whose promising political career was mysteriously short-circuited, has settled into a comfortable semi-senescence as a Civil War reenactor.

This book is so big and luscious...wonderful characters, including the South itself. Fabulous narration...not only does Scott Shepherd embody the character's voices perfectly, his little humorous inflections while reading descriptive passages drench them with color. You find yourself nodding in agreement...

    Sad when it ended

Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd. But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for...but she is not Natalie....

    Story

Manipulative writing with far too many trite phrases. One dimensional characters. None of the cracking humor of earlier books. And Scott Brick, while not as annoyingly melodramatic sounding as usual, is still an annoying narrator.

As a police launch speeds across Miami's Biscayne Bay - with officer Nestor Camacho on board - Tom Wolfe is off and running. Here is a big, panoramic story of the new America, as told by our master chronicler of the way we live now. Based on the same sort of detailed, on-scene, high-energy reporting that powered Tom Wolfe's previous best-selling novels, Back to Blood is another brilliant, spot-on, scrupulous, and often hilarious reckoning with our times.

Spectacular narration...the story and writing style are vintage Tom Wolfe; the first half is especially good, but the whole thing becomes a bit over the top in the second half. All that said, I am a Tom Wolfe fan, so I enjoyed it.
