For more than 500 years, the story of Joan of Arc has been an inspiration and a mystery. The least likely of heroines, a peasant girl with no education and no prospects, Joan turned herself into the legendary Maid of Orleans, knight, martyr, and saint. Following a voice she knew was God's, she led an army to victory in battle and crowned the king of France, only to be captured by her English enemies and burned at the stake as a heretic, all by the age of 19.

    D. Littman says: "Very moving book, a debunking of history"
    "Reader needs pronunciation coach"
    Overall

I enjoyed the book, which is of good quality in both content and style, but was really appalled at how consistently the reader mispronounced the name of every person, place and thing not in modern English.

An elderly couple living in Victorian London struggle against despair as their small resources dwindle. When an eccentric and mysterious gentleman answers their advertisement for a lodger, they celebrate. But as women begin dying at the hands of "The Avenger", they start to suspect something too horrific for words.

    Pamela says: "enjoyable"
    "Old fashioned fun"
    Overall

This is a high-quality period piece, well written and well paced. The reader's performance is superb, which elevates the material. If you have a tast for old-school suspense, this satisfies.
