  • 11-22-63: A Novel

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

After reading several review, I decided to try King again. I read most of his early stuff, took a break, then tried a couple more with mixed feelings.

I loved this book! Typical to have a bit of the supernatural that is bigger that we "get" and the pop culture that King is a master of using in his story. But for me the best part is the creation of the characters. I want so much for it to work out for Jake. I love the era, the detail of the time and of Jake's story aside from Kennedy. That is what makes this a great read.

If you haven't read King in a while, come back for this one. If you are a fan, you've already read it. If you are reluctant to read King - this is a great one and not to be missed. It is not the horror story, nor the super-super paranormal of some of the novels that are interconnected and twisted up a bit.

Down These Strange Streets takes you to the cities where fantasy and mystery collide and where private eyes who have seen it all find something lurking that is stranger still.... In “Death by Dahlia”, number-one New York Times best-selling author Charlaine Harris takes vampire Dahlia Lynley-Chivers to a lavish party that turns deadly. And with so many different creatures of the night in attendance, Dahlia will have a hard time identifying the most likely suspect.

I downloaded this for two reasons, Charlaine Harris and Diana Gabaldon. Harris's contribution was alright - not great, but still part of the Sookie universe. I really like Gabaldon's though. Trying to place it in the Outlander chronology - it is when Lord John is in the Indies after Claire and Jamie are gone to the Colonies. I really did enjoy the story- it was short, but for the material, it was great.

I plan on listening to the others at a later point.

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she'd rather not know. And now that she's an adult, she also realizes that some things that she knows about, she'd rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one. There's a thing or two she'd like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town.

I love the Sookie series. #12, and now left waiting at the end of another book for the next installment in May. Can't say very much about it without being a spoiler - but it was worth a credit and I feel pretty invested in the series at this point. I enjoy the "light" listen and caught myself several times smiling, laughing or even adding a comment of my own when a character said something stupid. The only downside of #12 - is that it felt short even though it was similar in length to the others.

I tried watching one episode of True Blood - and found that it was too different than the books. One reviewer commented that CH might be letting the True Blood series shape the books, I didn't see it from what I watched compared to the entire book series - but I do like the direction so far in #12. I love Johanna Parker - again, a wonderful narration.

Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

I really enjoy Walter Isaacson and loved Einstein. I like other reviewers, I did not really like the narrator. He was alright - but not great. Both my husband and I listened to this. He listened first and was telling me about Steve. Since that, I found it difficult to finish mostly because of the narrator and Steve is difficult to like through much of the book. I probably would have finished it quickly if my husband hadn't already told me about key points in the book.

I loved the fact that Jobs is presented realistically - arrogant, obsessive and a creative genius. I am now considering listening to Woz's book to see how he sees the other side of the story.

A scientific and medical revolution has crept up on us, based on study after study, from hundreds of laboratories around the world. It is no longer just a theoretical shift: every one of us will be touched by it, and many of us already have been. The meaning of disease, our understanding of the human body, and crucial decisions about what we all need to know and what choices we make about our health are at stake. Welcome to the new world of personalized medicine.

I really enjoyed both the story and narration. I was interested in learning more about our current technological abilities when it comes to using and understanding DNA.

Collins does a very good job with the subject and I enjoyed the practical nature of his presentation. I still doubt that we will be the DNA society that he hope we will become in his best case scenario example. But, it does make me interested in DNA testing and what it can reveal and I wonder if it will change how a person decides improve their health with that information.

I love the narration - Itzin does a great job.

  • The 4 Percent Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and the Race to Discover the Rest of Reality

Over the past few decades, a handful of scientists have been racing to explain a disturbing aspect of our universe: only four percent of it consists of the matter that makes up you, me, our books, and every star and planet. The rest is completely unknown. Richard Panek tells the dramatic story of the quest to find this “dark” matter and an even more bizarre substance called “dark energy”. This is perhaps the greatest mystery in all of science, and solving it will bring fame, funding, and certainly a Nobel Prize.

This was very good, but not GREAT. A worthwhile listen if you like to know about the people and the research and debate in physics/cosmology.

I enjoyed it, loved the narration and learn quite a bit in the process. Is this the best science that I have listened to? - No but only because this book is about the details of discovery, the people, places and papers that are a part of the history of scientific discover that tries to answer the essential questions of the universe. How did it begin, and what is happening now, and what will happen in the future? This book discusses what we currently can observe and explain about energy and matter in the context of the whole universe. It gives a little bit of insight how and where these scientists work.

Winner of the Quill Award and the Corine International Book Prize, Diana Gabaldon is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Outlander series. This fourth novel featuring popular character Lord John Grey is told both from Lord Grey’s perspective and from that of Jamie Fraser, the star of the Outlander series.

If you are a fan of Outlander, this is a nice addition and fits in while Jamie is in prison. I have listened to another Lord John, and it was ok - I like Lord John and his love of Jamie adds a dimension that is interesting, I just don't need the "romance novel" details, for that matter, some of the hetero romance detail is more than I like as well. But, don't let that stop you, there is not much of it and easy to pass over.

This is a good read and falls in the series between Dragonfly and Voyager. I read Voyager just after this again and it was nice to have more of the pieces to fill into Jamie's unknown 20 years. Such a great fit, written so long after Voyager I really appreciate Gabaldon's skill.

As far as the narration, I enjoyed the performance of Jeff Woodman doing both John and Jamie while in the narration from John's point of view. Rick Holmes did not do so much for me as Jamie - not bad, but after the couple hundred hours of Davina Porter doing Jamie's voice, Holmes is higher pitched and a bit nasal for how I imagine a man over 6 foot and burly to sound like. I wonder if I would have liked it better if I had read it myself and heard Davina Porter's voice in my head. Woodman does a bit better at it and I do like his voice of John even better than Porter's. His voice has the "fine" quality that fits John.

I did enjoy the two points of view in the narration. I have come to appreciate that in the later books of the main series as well as Gabaldon tells from other points of view than Claire's. It is nice to hear John and Jamie's thoughts and how their understanding of each other becomes the start of a friendship.

I look forward to other "short" (not so short) stories that fill in some of the stories of the other characters. I hope that one day, instead of having to buy the anthologies just to get one of Gabaldon's, that all the shorts will be in one compilation with good narration that compliments the portrayals of the characters we already hear in our minds when we think of them.

When Runnel leaves his mountain valley to head for the great city of the water mages, he has no idea of his own magical talents. But he soon finds that without meaning to, he complicates and then endangers the lives of everyone he comes to know and care about. For when it comes to magic, there are rules and laws, and the untrained mage-to-be must be careful not to tap into deep forces and ancient enmities. Otherwise, other people might end up paying the price for his mistakes.

I am not an avid fan of OSC - but I enjoyed Stonefather. I listened to the Lost Gate and loved it so I sought out more and found this. I have since listened to other OSC short stories, but have not become enthralled to the point to read everything he's written. So if you are not familiar with OSC -this might be a great listen since it seems out of his typical series genre - sci-fi Ender series. If you are an Ender fan, not sure how this will go over with you.

The narration is good - similar to Lost Gate - with Emily Janice Card narrated with a male main character - she does a great job.

This story comes before Lost Gate, but takes place in an unspecified distant past most likely on the other world. I found Lost Gate first and then this - I don't think the order mattered.

The Gate Thief is expected - looking forward to it.

I really enjoyed this book. I only recently in the last few years have the time or inclination to read science/history non-fiction.

I liked the development of the players through time in the different parts they had to play in the search for chemical antibiotics.

My only complaint is that the narrative is not as linear as I might have expected. Perhaps that is a strength for a writer, but for me as a listener, I would rather have had some of the events presented in chronological context rather than moving back and forth in time in relating the smaller details to larger points.

The title is a bit misleading, because we see that this is not just about one doctor, but all the players - but with every good story, there are heroes - and this story has many notable contributors.
