This book answered many questions about Pike's history and the strong bond between Elvis and him. The performance by Ron McLarty could not have been better.
It started out engaging but quickly became somewhat torturous (okay that might be an overstatement) to listen to. As much as I hate to say this, as I LOVE the Jack Reacher character, it might be time to say farewell. The series is GREAT, this book....not so much. Finishing it became something I did to check it off my list as I actually was not invested in it at all and the ending was, well, predictable. I may reread or re listen to the series again but I would be hard pressed to buy a new one.
This book seemed to last forever, but not in a good way. The story line, although imaginative, was too far fetched to be believable. Even suspending disbelief didn't work. It seems the author wanted a modern day spy/whodunit sort of book with a backdrop of the ancestry of civilization in the US, add some nanobots in with a doomsday scenario and there's the book. Sort of wacky, which is okay, but it was not entertaining. I do not think I will consider another book by this author.
I have read or listened to all of his books and Bosch is one of my favorite characters. This book just felt flat from the story, which lacked depth, to the narration, which seemed to drone on. I don't remember the other books in the series having so much 'reading" as opposed to character involvement. Lots of reference to Bosch doing this or Bosch doing that but not alot of Bosch or the other characters actually talking.....
I have read them all and look forward to their release. I would have to say that this was probably the worst.
It was a pleasant way to pass the time but not what I would call spell binding or one of those books that you just can't stop listening to. It was okay, not great, not terrible. The narration helped move the book along.
The story in and of itself is not bad but it just went on too long. Instead of wishing it would not end (as when you are listening to a really good book) I was hoping it would get done with already... It just went on and on. Even Scott Brick, who I typically really enjoy, started to wear on me. If there is an abridged version that might be preferable.
