England, 1959: Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

I have become a big Kate Morton fan over the past few years but this was definitely not her best work. The storyline just wasn't as compelling as usual and the characters were rather predictable. I usually really enjoy Caroline Lee's narration, but as a native Brit, I do find her attempts at local accents to be less than credible.

Bill Black is a scary guy: a tall ex-con who rides to work on a Harley, and trails an air of violence wherever he goes. In Macon, Georgia, Bill has caught the eye of a wiry little drug dealer and his cunning girlfriend. They think Bill might be a useful ally. They don’t know that Bill is a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent named Will Trent. Or that he is fighting his own demons, undercover and cut off from the support of Sara Linton - the woman he loves, who he dares not tell he is putting himself at such risk.

I simply can't believe the positive reviews on this book! I have purchased, and enjoyed, several Karin Slaughter books so adding this to my collection was a no-brainer and I was looking forward to the read. It very quickly became apparent, however, that this was not of Slaughter's usual caliber and I've found myself alternating between zoning out completely, or gritting my teeth at the unbearably tedious dialogue that characterizes this novel. In all the years I've been an Audible platinum subscriber, I've only ever felt compelled to write one other review, but in this case I couldn't hold my tongue! You know when you keep checking how much time is left in the book - and not in a good way - it's probably time to ditch it for something more enjoyable.

When a teenage girl dies in a suspicious fire, Detective Olivia Sutherland is assigned to track down the arsonist. Then she discovers something more sinister—a vicious blackmailer who preys on young people and murders without hesitation. Making her work even harder is sexy firefighter David Hunter. He’s not only sharing the case but sparking memories of their long-ago night of passion, when feelings were left unspoken and hearts were broken.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I purchased this book based on positive reviews but I am struggling to get through it. I really don't like the narrator, but I can't tell if it's because she has crap dialogue to get through versus not being a particularly good story-teller. Won't buy another book written by Karen Rose or narrated by Marguerite Gavin.

It is Warsaw, 1939, and Elzunia is an indulged teenager who longs for a heroic life filled with romance. But the outbreak of war shatters all her dreams. As bombs fall, she meets Adam, a taciturn airman whose fate becomes entwined with hers. In despair over the occupation, Adam joins the Polish resistance, then flies bombers for the RAF.

I can't decide if I like the book or not because the narrator is horrible. The first part of the book is riddled with overwrought, irritating exclamations - where was the director? I have gritted my teeth and suffered through Part 1 as I've already trashed two books recently that the narrator ruined for me. In future, I will make a practice of listening to a sample before I buy - good narration is paramount for a successful listening experience.

Three time-traveling historians are visiting World War II England: Michael Davies, intent on observing heroism during the Miracle of Dunkirk; Merope Ward, studying children evacuated from London; and Polly Churchill, posing as a shopgirl in the middle of the Blitz. But when the three become unexpectedly trapped in 1940, they struggle not only to find their way home but to survive as Hitler's bombers attempt to pummel London into submission.

I rarely give up on an audible book, but between the lame dialogue, annoying fake British accent (I'm a native Brit, so I know that pronouncing "gas" as "gaaaaas" is just plain wrong.) Couldn't get past the accent quirks and blah characters I'm afraid. It's a shame because I'd already purchased All Clear, the next book in the series, so that is destined for the trash bin too.

It is January 1944 - and as Allied troops prepare for D day, Nazi scientists develop a toxic nerve gas that will repel and wipe out any invasion force. To salvage the planned assault, two vastly different but equally determined men are sent to infiltrate the secret concentration camp where the poison gas is being perfected on human subjects. Their only objective: destroy all traces of the gas and the men who created it - no matter how many lives may be lost...including their own.

    "Great book; narration disappointing"
    Overall

As a native of Great Britain, I found it really hard to ignore the absolutely dreadful English and Scots accents employed by the narrator. I'm sure it isn't easy to narrate a book with such a wide range of voices and accent types, but it's really off-putting when the accents are SO bad.
