I don't understand how one could ding the author himself on his reading. I have had the pleasure to be in the audience twice when R.B. was present. Once to discuss his life, and another at one of his plays. True, the reading is somewhat slow. I listened at 1 1/2 speed and is was quite good. At the end he has an excellent interview.

I "read" this book over a little over a week. It is a road book with great insights into the culture, history, and politics of China. It is refreshing that the author shares his point of view after much musing as he travels. Rob Gifford is a great reporter and a fine thinker. Highly recommended.
