Princeton, New Jersey, at the turn of the 20th century: a tranquil place to raise a family, a genteel town for genteel souls. But something dark and dangerous lurks at the edges of the town, corrupting and infecting its residents. Vampires and ghosts haunt the dreams of the innocent. A powerful curse besets the elite families of Princeton; their daughters begin disappearing. A young bride on the verge of the altar is seduced and abducted by a dangerously compelling man - a shape-shifting, vaguely European prince who might just be the devil.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes and no. It's a good story, but it just takes so damn long for anything to happen. Then the epilogue is so long and flowery, it just drags.

Has The Accursed turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

What aspect of Grover Gardner’s performance would you have changed?

    Great reading of the book.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

A bit of a disappointment from one of my favorite authors.

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Would you try another book from Doris Kearns Goodwin and/or Suzanne Toren?

Yes, it's a great book, it's just too dense to listen to, I'd rather read it.

What would have made Learn Japanese - Ultimate Getting Started with Japanese Box Set, Lessons 1-55 better?

If they would have slowed down and given you time to repeat the same words over and over. Instead they move on constantly to new phrases, so you never get the ones you just heard. Unless you were sitting down with workbook in front of you, there is no way you're going to learn anything with this.

Has Learn Japanese - Ultimate Getting Started with Japanese Box Set, Lessons 1-55 turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes.

What didn’t you like about Peter Galante and Naomi Kambe ’s performance?

    Too fast.

Throughout history, food has acted as a catalyst of social change, political organization, geopolitical competition, industrial development, military conflict, and economic expansion. An Edible History of Humanity is a pithy, entertaining account of how a series of changes---caused, enabled, or influenced by food---has helped to shape and transform societies around the world.

What disappointed you about An Edible History of Humanity?

The narrator was so monotone that I nearly fell asleep...while jogging.

What could Tom Standage have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Had any inflection in his voice, or interest in the subject.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He took a fairly interesting subject and read it like only the most boring college professor can.

What character would you cut from An Edible History of Humanity?

    n/a

    Any additional comments?

Though the subject matter seem interesting, this book ends up making it more like a dull botany class.

  • Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

What made the experience of listening to Born Standing Up the most enjoyable?

I really enjoyed hearing Mr. Martin read his story in his own voice. He's got a wry sense of humor and is an expert at timing, so the book was really enjoyable when heard instead of read.

What did you like best about this story?

Learning about the hard work and artistry that went into Mr. Martin's career.

    Any additional comments?

If you are looking for celebrity "dirt," you won't find it here. Martin didn't write a "tell all" here, but then again, he's got way too much class for that. Great book!
