I've become a big fan of Seth Godin in recent months, and this audiobook didn't disappoint. The Purple Cow is the truly unique and remarkable product, service, benefit or feature that can make your brand stand apart from the countless boring - and floundering - brands out there.
Godin's very good at weaving together his advice, anecdotes and theories, and I came away from Purple Cow feeling newly energized with creative and innovative ideas. The man himself is a living demonstration of the power of creative brand-building, and I hope his ideas keep flowing freely for a long time yet.
My disappointment in this audiobook is in direct proportion to the (surprisingly) great reviews it's been getting. I bought it on the strength of those reviews, so when I found I'd purchased hours of repetitive anecdotes about the author's courier and document storage businesses, I was disappointed.
I am in a service industry in a field that requires innovation, creativity and a strong marketing focus. This book may be invaluable for those setting up a small business in a very traditional field, but unfortunately I didn't take away any interesting advice or information from the entire book.
Buy-ology is a fascinating study of why we buy, and how that differs from why we think we buy. The book is filled with examples and study results, but is never dry or difficult to understand.
I found myself excitedly relating parts of this book to marketing colleagues, which is always a good sign. I look forward to future releases by Lindstrom.
