After his parents die, five-year-old Little Tree goes to live with his grandparents in their cabin deep in the Tennessee mountain hollows. Granpa instructs the boy in the ancient wisdom of “The Way” of honoring nature’s subtle balance. Even when he faces racism and the white authorities try to take him from his grandparents, Little Tree’s understanding and humor sustain him.

    Any additional comments?

I read this book for a book club and I was the only person who "read" it as an audio book. The narrator of this audio book does not fully capture the essence of the protagonist. I had a completely different image of the protagonist from the rest of my book club members. The narrator was too "proper" in his use of language and didn't read the book in the venacular which it was written.

Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. It serves as a salute to New York City during the late 60s and 70s and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions. A true fable, it is a portrait of two young artists' ascent, a prelude to fame.

What made the experience of listening to Just Kids the most enjoyable?

I love listening to Patti Smiths fascinating life told by Patti herself. Her life was so interesting, like the epitome of an artist and rock and roller's life. love it.

Addy Hanlon has always been Beth Cassidy's best friend and trusted lieutenant. Beth calls the shots and Addy carries them out, a long-established order of things that has brought them to the pinnacle of their high-school careers. Now they're seniors who rule the intensely competitive cheer squad, feared and followed by the other girls -- until the young new coach arrives.

Cool and commanding, an emissary from the adult world just beyond their reach, Coach Colette French draws Addy and the other cheerleaders into her life. Only Beth, unsettled by the new regime, remains outside Coach's golden circle, waging a subtle but vicious campaign to regain her position as "top girl" -- both with the team and with Addy herself.

Then a suicide focuses a police investigation on Coach and her squad. After the first wave of shock and grief, Addy tries to uncover the truth behind the death -- and learns that the boundary between loyalty and love can be dangerous terrain.

The raw passions of girlhood are brought to life in this taut, unflinching exploration of friendship, ambition, and power. Award-winning novelist Megan Abbott, writing with what Tom Perrotta has hailed as "total authority and an almost desperate intensity," provides a harrowing glimpse into the dark heart of the all-American girl.

What would have made Dare Me better?

It's a lot like an LMN movie which I admit I like but other than that I didn't think it was that great. The cheerleaders are annoying, the story became predictable.
