Jane Austen's most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters.

This book is my all time favorite. The dialog is stunning. The characters have become a part of my inner world, they are so real to me. It takes the ordinary theme of young men and women meeting and falling in love to a level that I simply have never encountered in any other story I've read. It is all done with brilliant and cleverly written dialog. To think that this was written by a young woman of her time is truly amazing, that is was so popular at the time is even more amazing and that it continues to be such a favorite is only well deserved.
I enjoyed this audio book very much and look forward to Part II. Although I have read this book at least a dozen times over the past four decades, it is always as delightful as it was the first time I read it.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles introduces Hercule Poirot, mystery fiction's greatest detective. Dapper, brilliant Monsieur Poirot, retired as the Chief of Belgian Police, is summoned to a magnificent English country estate to solve a murder. The victim: a wealthy heiress. The suspects: her fortune-hunting husband, her jealous relatives, even her hired companion. The solution: a deadly scheme that is revealed by the master detective himself.

    Story

I have been reading Agatha Christie since my teens, decades ago. This is my third or fourth time through this book, first time in audio form. It is very well narrated, David Suchet manages female characters admirably, makes them all unique, which I was impressed by. The mystery is typical Christie. I remember being pleasantly surprised by one characters's duplicity and while I knew that there would be a delightful twist in the plot, I was quite happy to simply go along with the story as it unfolds. I love these old murder mysteries, preferring them to the modern psychological grisly detailed mysteries. The characters all either win your affection or your disdain. I recommend this for pure enjoyment, entertainment and fullness of characters, but it is not flashy or grisly if that is what you like.

Elfrida Phipps tries to exorcise the pain of the past and find peace, taking refuge in a rambling house in the north of Scotland called Corrydale. Almost like a magnet, Corrydale attracts various waifs and strays, each of them escaping difficult personal pasts. As the holidays approach and the weather turns foul, it seems a perfect recipe for disaster.

Rosamunde Pilcher is only second to Jane Austin in my world, with The Shell Seekers on a par with Pride and Prejudice. Winter Solstice is not exciting in any way, it is like comfort food...filling and satisfying. It is a simple story about simple people who could be people you know or used to know. Do not let me give you the idea that this means the story is boring, it is not, not at all. I loved getting to know the characters, sharing their losses, pleasures and loves, especially Oscar. This is a perfect book to curl up with when you want soothing or to be taken out of your own woes for a short time and go for a brief visit somewhere else.

  • The Painted Veil

First published in 1925, The Painted Veil is an affirmation of the human capacity to grow, change, and forgive. Set in England and Hong Kong in the 1920s, it is the story of the beautiful but shallow young Kitty Fane. When her husband discovers her adulterous affair, he forces her to accompany him to a remote region of China ravaged by a cholera epidemic.

    Story

Wonderful story teller. Maugham had insight and compassion for the human condition of his time. In this story most particularly he offers understanding about the societal bondage of women and he writes with surprising sympathy of Kitty's "awakening" to her true powers as a female in a wholly male dominated world. She purposefully has not been very educated, is not talented in any particular way, has not been nurtured to think well of herself, except as a pretty, marriageable female. Even in that she has been made to feel she is lacking. An older man becomes besotted with her and convinces her to marry him, aided by the pressure of Kitty's younger sister marrying leaving Kitty open to becoming that most derided female--a spinster. She is seduced by another man, a vain and selfish aging Lothario. When Kitty is revealed as imperfect, her husband threatens and punishes her emotionally and puts her in harm's way. Despite her husband's cruel vindictiveness and her lover's betrayal Kitty matures, learns her own worth and moves on. Kate Reading did a superb job narrating. Lovely story.

    Story

This recording is not what it should be. First of all, I want to say that the narration by Constance Towers is wonderful. This made the errors in this recording even more disappointing. The story about Aramina is chopped off mid way and another unnamed story starts in the middle of that story.
It is a mechanical error. The full story of Aramina is not on this recording.
