This is a fast-paced novel with lots of laughs and heart. It reminded me of Sophie Kinsella's writing, which is a good thing.

In Pretty in Plaid, Jen Lancaster reveals how she developed the hubris that perpetually gets her into trouble. Using fashion icons of her youth to tell her hilarious and insightful stories, readers will meet the girl she used to be. Jen Lancaster was a badge-hungry Junior Girl Scout with a knack for extortion, an aspiring sorority girl who didn't know her Coach from her Louis Vuitton, and a budding executive who found herself bewildered by her first encounter with a fax machine.

I've listened to four of Lancaster's nonfiction books and they've all made me laugh. She's bitchy and snotty, which she compensates for with a good measure of self-deprecation. The important thing is that she's very funny.

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect! Well, perfect except that the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree.

This is really well plotted, with lots of surprising twists. The main character is endearing and the supporting characters are funny. I laughed a lot. I've read all of Kinsella's novels and think this one is the best. It's a ton of fun..

Anne Tyler gives us a wise, haunting, and deeply moving new novel in which she explores how a middle-aged man, torn apart by the death of his wife, is gradually restored by her frequent appearances: in their house, on the roadway, in the market. Gradually he discovers, as he works in the family's vanity-publishing business, turning out titles that presume to guide beginners through the trials of life, that maybe for this beginner there is a way of saying goodbye.

    Story

I have read all of Anne Tyler's books. She's one of my favorite authors. This book is terrific like her others. The protagonist is a stubborn young widower who walks with a cane and has trouble overcoming his grief. He is fully fleshed out, and surrounded by fun, quirky friends, coworkers, and relatives. If you like smart, character-driven novels with humor and poignancy, you can't do much better than an Anne Tyler novel such as this one.

Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker's troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital, Camille's first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

Flynn is a fantastic writer. I loved Gone Girl. It's one of my favorite novels in recent years. Sharp Objects isn't quite as good, in my opinion, but it's still better than most novels.

While Gone Girl is creepy, I found Sharp Objects much creepier. It was hard to take at times. The main mystery in Sharp Objects is discovering who killed two little girls and pulled out all their teeth. The protagonist is hugely damaged psychologically and physically, and her mother and sister are both horrible. At times I wanted to stop listening because it was too creepy for me. But the suspense was fantastic and I just had to keep going.

Parents, educators, and the media wring their hands about the plight of America's children and teens - soaring rates of emotional problems, limited coping skills, disengagement from learning - and yet there are ways to reverse these disheartening trends. Teach Your Children Well acknowledges that every parent wants successful children. However, until we are clearer about our core values and the parenting choices that are most likely to lead to authentic, and not superficial, success, we will continue to raise exhausted, externally driven, impaired children.

    Story

The author uses research as well as her personal experience as a therapist and mother to shed light on how parenting styles, schooling, peer groups, and society impact children and teens.

Levine advocates putting less pressure on teens. She is somewhat of an anti-Tiger Mom. She sensibly suggests encouraging children to do their homework and study for tests, but not pressuring them to be number one in their class and to take classes and do activities for the sole purpose of looking good to college admissions officers.

I like her emphasis on helping children and teens become self-reliant and understand their unique selves, interests, passions, and talents, while ensuring that parents don't sacrifice all their own interests and passions for their children's. This is wise and caring advice.

A sophisticated, pause-resistant double love story spanning 40 years - an unforgettable Brief Encounter for our times. It is 1960. When Jennifer Stirling wakes up in the hospital, she can remember nothing - not the tragic car accident, not her husband, not even who she is. She feels like a stranger in her own life until she stumbles upon an impassioned letter, signed simply "B", asking her to leave her husband. Years later, a journalist named Ellie discovers the same enigmatic letter in a forgotten file in her newspaper's archives....

Poppy Dunbar is out on her "hen night" when she meets Tom Kennedy. With his dark eyes and quirky smile, he could lure any girl off the straight and narrow, but what really draws Poppy to him is the feeling that she's known him all her life. She can't go through with the meeting they arrange - but she can't go through with the wedding either.

The six people profiled here have diverse backgrounds and accomplishments, but all were hit hard in life and not only bounced back but surged ahead. I was particularly impressed by the woman who, after battling cancer in her early twenties, started up a foundation to help other cancer victims battle infertility, and the single mother with no money or connections who started a corporation eventually worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

I loved listening to Penny Marshall's kooky sense of humor and very distinctive New Yawk accent. She had and has many famous friends and exes-- Rob Reiner, Albert Brooks, Carrie Fischer, Art Garfunkel, etc. It was fun to hear about the exploits of these A-listers and interesting to hear about the movies Penny Marshall directed, such as Big, Awakenings, and A League of Their Own.

Gavin Greene is a hopeless romantic. He’s also a professional one: He writes the wedding column for a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, covering spectacular parties from coast to coast. But there’s a thin line between being a hotshot reporter on assignment and being a single guy alone on a Saturday night at someone else’s wedding. Everything changes on New Year’s Eve when Gavin meets Melinda, a travel writer with enchanting dimples....
