Athena Hera Sinistra never wanted to go to space. Never wanted see the eerie glow of the Powerpods. Never wanted to visit Circum Terra. Never had any interest in finding out the truth about the DarkShips. You always get what you dont ask for. Which must have been why she woke up in the dark of shipnight, within the greater night of space in her father's space cruiser, knowing that there was a stranger in her room.

Would you try another book from Sarah A. Hoyt and/or Kymberly Dakin?

    No

What could Sarah A. Hoyt have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Move along the plot and make it seem less like a female soap opera fantasy in space.

What didn’t you like about Kymberly Dakin’s performance?

Her voice reminds me of every arrogant, swarmy socialite elitist I've ever met. Rubbed me the wrong way.

What character would you cut from Darkship Thieves?

    I didn't finish it.

    Any additional comments?

    Pretty horrid.

It's the 21st century, and global warming is here to stay, so forget the way your country used to look. And get used to the free market, too – the companies possess all the best hardware, and they're calling the shots now. In a world like this, a man open to any offers can make out just fine. A man like Greg Mandel for instance, who's psi-boosted, wired into the latest sensory equipment, carrying state-of-the-art weaponry – and late of the English Army's Mindstar Battalion.

What would have made Mindstar Rising better?

The story moved too slow. I couldn't finish it. I usually give an audio book a couple of hours to grab me, but this one was horrible compared to Pandora's Star, which was superb.

What could Peter F. Hamilton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Pacing

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

    He was fine

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Boredom

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

    Devin says: "Great Epic Scifi"

Believe it or not, I actually looked forward to a 12 hour drive across Texas so I could listen to this book. It is that good. The vision of the future is bright, but the undercurrent is dark. Terrorists, alien plots, corporate arrogance, wealthy 'quasi-nobles' playing with the future of billions...romance, sex, military action. The author evokes images in your mind in an effective way and the British accented narrator does a good job. One of my favorite audio books ever.

Robust, peaceful, and confident, the Commonwealth dispatched a ship to investigate the mystery of a disappearing star, only to inadvertently unleash a predatory alien species that turned on its liberators, striking hard, fast, and utterly without mercy. The Prime are the Commonwealth's worst nightmare. Coexistence is impossible with the technologically advanced aliens, who are genetically hardwired to exterminate all other forms of life.

    Susan says: "Exceptionally great book"
    "Excellent Sci Fi--a classic"
    Overall

The narration is very good. This is classic hard science fiction that is totally believable. Some characters die and it's like 5-6 of the finest Star Trek episodes intertwining and then finally coming together in a hard core military style. It has spy thriller, romance novel, military science fiction, weird aliens, hookers and a little too much detail on the sex scenes. I don't really care to read Sci Fi for the sex scenes. But nothing can deter from the 5 star review. The end dragged out a bit, but it was worth it.
