With penetrating insight, Amanda Foreman reveals a fascinating woman whose struggle against her own weaknesses, whose great beauty and flamboyance, and whose determination to play a part in the affairs of the world make her a vibrant, astonishingly contemporary figure.

I love historical fiction and although I realize this book is more of a biographical history of the Duchess of Devonshire than a fictional novel, it does not disappoint. It's a good "story" of her life, based on well researched facts and letters, but it doesn't bore one to death. In fact, I could hardly stop listening. That's either a testament to Georgiana's fascinating life and exploits, or the author's writing ability, or both. Either way, I highly recommend it.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

This is a unique tale, and I dare anyone not to get sucked into it immediately. I had it in my library for a long time and never listened to it...I don't know why. But once I finally gave it a chance I was hooked. The movie's got nothing on the book, as usual, although it does stay fairly true to the story. The narrators were both great, also, and I loved how he did different voices for the characters that really worked for them. Sometimes I don't like when narrators do character voices, but these were very good and fitting.

Daughter of the Duke of Milan and wife of the conniving Count Girolamo Riario, Caterina Sforza was the bravest warrior Renaissance Italy ever knew. She ruled her own lands, fought her own battles, and openly took lovers whenever she pleased. Her remarkable tale is told by her lady-in-waiting, Dea, a woman knowledgeable in reading the "triumph cards", the predecessor of modern-day Tarot.

I thought this book was great. It was different than what I expected, but it held my interest until the end. There were some rather strange elements...but nothing that I felt detracted from the story. It was neither too much nor too little of anything, but had just enough of everything that I like: it was descriptive, atmospheric, told a good story, and it had sex, violence, warfare, and interesting details of life in the renaissance.

In medieval England, four children have been murdered, and the townsfolk blame their Jewish neighbors. The doctor chosen to investigate is a woman, Adelia. As she examines the victims and retraces their last steps, she must conceal her true identity in order to avoid accusations of witchcraft. Along the way, she's assisted by Sir Rowley Picot, a man with a personal stake in the investigation. A former Crusader knight, Rowley may be a needed friend - or the fiend for whom they are searching.

This book sounded great, and had good reviews, but I am about halfway through and I have to say I am disappointed. The writing is great, the plot is very exciting, the characters are good, but it's just kind of boring. Everything is 'on the surface' in this book. The author does not really get very deep into things, I keep having this feeling like I WANT to know them all better but the story keeps a polite distance between the reader and the characters. Maybe it's the reader, I'm not sure, but I don't know if I'll continue this series as eagerly as I jumped into the Lady Julia Grey mystery books.
