The life Kamila Sidiqi had known changed overnight when the Taliban seized control of the city of Kabul. After receiving a teaching degree during the civil war - a rare achievement for any Afghan woman - Kamila was subsequently banned from school and confined to her home. When her father and brother were forced to flee the city, Kamila became the sole breadwinner for her five siblings. Armed only with grit and determination, she picked up a needle and thread and created a thriving business of her own.

    Story

Read this book if you want to understand Afghanistan, its history, the people and the Taliban. I had no idea about any of this except that the Taliban are extremist. I had no idea how the Taliban came to be so fundamental until this book. This was explained in the first few chapters and sets the stage for this true story of Kamela Sediqi who became the dressmaker of Khair Khana.

When the Taliban first came to Kabul, Kamela had just finished at the University and had hoped to get a job teaching. Her hopes were quickly dashed when the Taliban decreed that women were to stay at home, obtain no jobs, not leave the house without being fully covered and having a male chaperone, and other rules which seemed to change daily. They also roamed the streets like common thugs looking for the slightest reason to beat women, even the elderly. Women went from a world of hope to one of despair.

This is the very powerful biography of a young woman who changed what she could by starting her own secret business in her home and in so doing provided an income and hope for her family and the families of many others.

The only thing that I would have changed were the voices of the various characters. The reader gave them no individuality. All voices, both men and women, sounded alike. It was sometimes difficult to tell the women apart because of this.

When a preacher with a message of hope for the homeless is found brutally executed, reporter Cindy Thomas knows the story could be huge. Probing deeper into the victim's history, she discovers he may not have been as saintly as everyone thought...

The everyday lives of our intrepid women sleuths should not be read consecutively because after reading eight in a row I now need a break.

James Patterson's short chapters make reading in increments enjoyable. His books are great for people who have little or no time to read. His novel proceeds with breakneck pace and surprises that captivate. A bomb explosion, a serial killer stalking San Francisco's wealthiest residents, the murdered of a beloved homeless person, and a botched jury verdict keep the action alive and make the book a fun read.

When I need a good escape Patterson doesn't fail me and he hasn’t in this book either. The characters have become real and I get to know them a little more with each book, but as I said above, I now need a break. I have to agree with others that they are somewhat formula books.

I am trying to go back and write reviews for those books that I neglected. I gave this book a four star because I could not remember the results of both stories within the book and had to go back and reread the end. Still that says a lot for a book that I read over a yr. ago with many, many books in between then and now. Remembering both stories and only forgetting the ending of one gives a thumbs up for any book recommendation.

7th Heaven contains the short chapters that Mr. Patterson is known for and makes for easy/fast reading. Love that about his books. It's still a good mystery. If you're a James Patterson fan you won't be disappointed because this book contains his usual twist and turns after coming out of the shoot with action to capture your interest.

A nine-year-old boy is found murdered at the bottom of a well near a popular beach resort in southern Italy. In what looks like a hopeless case for Guido Guerrieri, a Senegalese peddler is accused of the crime. Faced with small-town racism, Guido attempts to exploit the esoteric workings of the Italian courts. The voice of Sean Barrett brings this gritty Italian detective series to life.

From the Anthony Award-winning author of the immensely popular Sookie Stackhouse mysteries comes the first book starring Lily Bard, a reclusive cleaning lady with a penchant for karate. When Lily finds and reports a dead body, her shady past and connections to potential perpetrators make her a leading suspect.

If you are looking for Sookie Stackhouse, move on down the line. This is a non-paranormal mystery series. It is more of a Murder She Wrote book although Lily is definitely NOT a Jessica Fletcher in any way. She is dark because of her past which she wants to keep in the past. It is revealed, however, and that is the part that is difficult to read but necessary to understanding this complex character.

Behind the seemingly innocuous façade of St Mary's, a different kind of historical research is taking place. They don't do 'time-travel' - they 'investigate major historical events in contemporary time'. Maintaining the appearance of harmless eccentrics is not always within their power - especially given their propensity for causing loud explosions when things get too quiet. Meet the disaster-magnets of St Mary's Institute of Historical Research as they ricochet around History.

Time travel can be a fun notion and this book is a testament to that notion. It is kind of an "over the top" fantasy but yet a fun one. The idea of an academic being recruited by a former teacher for a unique position in a history dept. without a lot of explanation IS a stretch. This is only one of the implausible plot twists and yet Jodi makes you a believer. It is a light read with fun characters, interesting historical tidbits and a very inventive plot.

From #1 New York Times-best-selling author Nora Roberts comes a novel of a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed, and danger that brings them together - and that could tear them apart… As a professional house-sitter and freelance writer, nothing ties Lila Emerson down - not her work, not a home, and definitely not a relationship. She spends her life moving from one job to the next, sometimes crashing at a friend 's Manhattan apartment. And though she can appreciate her clients ' extraordinary homes, their expensive collections, and their adorable pets, Lila has never longed for possessions of her own. Everything she has, including her heart, is portable.
