In the more than 25 years since she co-founded Omega Institute - now the world's largest center for spiritual retreat and personal growth - Elizabeth Lesser has been an intimate witness to the ways in which people weather change and transition. In a beautifully crafted blend of moving stories, humorous insights, practical guidance, and personal memoir, she offers tools to help us make the choice we all face in times of challenge: Will we be broken down and defeated, or broken open and transformed?

Would you consider the audio edition of Broken Open to be better than the print version?

    Never read print

What other book might you compare Broken Open to and why?

Anatomy of the Spirit, Until Today

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Denaker’s performances?

NO. That is the reason I'm writing this review. Her voice is pretty difficult to listen too. And her child and eldery people immitations are too much to bear. They are grinding and syrupy. Takes away from the book's essence and meaning.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I would not make a film about this book.

    Any additional comments?

Again, highly recommend this book as a reader. Not as an audio book. At least until you get a new narrator.

  • The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory

In a rare blend of scientific insight and writing as elegant as the theories it explains, one of the world's leading string theorists, peels away the layers of mystery surrounding string theory to reveal a universe that consists of 11 dimensions where the fabric of space tears and repairs itself, and all matter-from the smallest quarks to the most gargantuan supernovas-is generated by the vibrations of microscopically tiny loops of energy.

Where does The Elegant Universe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best books covering really hard subjects I've every read. If physics is something you longed to understand, you will not put this one down.

What other book might you compare The Elegant Universe to and why?

    I don't have

What does Erik Davies bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Erik Davies is gifted with a voice that gives credence to Greene's narrative. He sounds excited about what he's saying. And his inflections get you excited about learning about some pretty high topics.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not at all - not in one sitting. Unless you are a theoretical or other physicist, then you have to be willing to read this text over and over until the material becomes intuitive.
But no worries. The fun analogies make returning again and again down right addictive. Physics, anyone?

    Any additional comments?

This book was recommended to me, as a way to understand the difficult subject - physics. It was one of the best recommendations I've ever received. Green wants us to know about physics and share his knowledge, which is why this book is so darn good.
It's like a great cook, who works very hard to make sure the flavors are perfect.

  • Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 43 mins)

The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

Would you listen to Beyond Religion again? Why?

I have listened to this book about 5 times since I downloaded 2 months ago. And I will listen to it again.

What did you like best about this story?

The title speaks to what is best about this story.

Which character – as performed by Martin Sheen – was your favorite?

Martin Sheen's narration of the Dalai Lama was interesting. But it appears that he did this book justice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Ah, yes. If I coulda, I woulda listened in one sitting.

    Any additional comments?

He boldly challenges the traditional notion that forces us to equate goodness to being part of a religion. It's a concept many would argue but, for me, his thoughts and theories are rather enlighting and affirming.

  • The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Values, and Spiritual Growth, 25th Anniversary Edition

Perhaps no book in this generation has had a more profound impact on our intellectual and spiritual lives than The Road Less Traveled. With sales of more than 7 million copies in the United States and Canada, and translation into more than 23 languages, it has made publishing history, with more than 10 years on The New York Times best seller list.

If you could sum up The Road Less Traveled in three words, what would they be?

Every human should read this book. It helps us understand our roles as they pertain to psychotherapy. It's a shame most people won't read this because most people don't think they need to read about or understand the importance of phychotherpy in our lives (which is a subject he boldly comments on and addresses). The quality of humanity would improve greatly if we all read and accepted many of the concepts in this book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    N/A

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The introduction to this book is bold and challenging. Once you read that, you'll probably be hooked. (Unless you're not ready to take responsbility for who you are and how you got there.)
