I'm a Baldacci/Camel Club fan so hung in there to the end. However, the story seemed disjointed. Felt like Baldacci needed to add a few more pages so he kept coming up with new twists. I was glad to finish. Three stars only out of fan loyalty!
I would have preferred to read this book. The narrator, as noted by many others, was beyond awful. The story could have been shortened in half. I've read other Greg Illes books and they are beginning to all run together. This one has interesting twists and turns and the ending (when it finally comes) is well done. Only 3 stars......
So sorry to have to write a negative review for a John Grisham book but this one is really a dud. Had this been written in the early 80's when we were just finding out the evils of the coal industry it may have been more interesting. As it goes, this book has been told many times by many writers. The coal companies are scum bags who have and continue to ruin the mountains of VA, WV and KY along with other states. So what's new about that?? And the narrator doesn't do a very effective job. Just a bad read/listen.
And BTW, to the reviewer William Crovatt of Tokyo Japan......a 'chick book'.....one the 'ladies would like'.....Hey dude it's 2014. You need to find a real woman!!!!!
I keep hoping for another #1 Women's Detective Agency from McCall Smith. This one isn't anywhere close. It's a nice and sometimes funny story but I wouldn't recommend it nor would I get another in the series. The narrator does a most excellent job - great voice and accent. The ending was just that.....it ended!
This is a beautifully written and narrated story about a conservationist who truly gets it. He's in sync with his land, his animals and Africa. And the story is breathtakingly authentic and noble. Well worth the time to listen.
Excellent - all of it. Burke is the BEST!! Will Patton is awesome as well. Give this a go.
There was a cloud over the entire book. It was depressing in most aspects and seemed to go from one tragedy to the next. The narration was excellent and the story had relevance - especially with the recent news but still, a downer.
If you're looking for edge of your seat, action packed suspense, this is not the book for you. If you're looking for a beautifully told story, check out this book. The characters hold their own and each adds to the tale of a man and his son during the 50's in Montana. The ending is perfect - you get just enough information to satisfy any questions yet enough leeway to wonder. The reader does an excellent job. Wow! I loved this book!
Why I listened as long as I did is my fault!! I should have thrown in the towel on the first download and saved myself a lot of aggravation. There are so many characters in this book and such a long span of time that it became nearly impossible to keep track of the details. And the details I did retain we meaningless. There little of any emotion in this book - a little misery, a little self-satisfaction but very little else. None of the characters stood out from the others. This is a long, dreary, dull book.
I'm not a weepy person yet I shed tears at the end of this sweet book. No action here, no who dun it - simply a great story with characters I will think about for time to come. The author did a great job as did the readers. Very thought provoking and well worth the credit.
I remember Annie Dillard from Pilgrim at Tinker's Creek and hoped this book with give me as much joy as as that one did. I lasted till 1/2 way through the second download and couldn't bear another minute of it. There are too many characters, too many odd names, too many generations and too many stories to tackle in one book. Although the years sped by in this book, the story did not. Nothing ever seemed to be resolved and there was not much to keep my interested. I am obviously among the few who did not enjoy this book. I gave it a go and figure my time is more valuable than being able to say I finished this!
