From one of our most powerful writers, a work of stunning frankness about losing a daughter. Richly textured with bits of her own childhood and married life with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, and daughter, Quintana Roo, this new book by Joan Didion examines her thoughts, fears, and doubts regarding having children, illness, and growing old.

Would you listen to Blue Nights again? Why?

Yes. I will listen to it again.

What does Kimberly Farr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Pauses. Time to let thoughts sink in.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No more emotional than Didion's thoughts themselves, which, by their starkness, are moving. Often through their repetition.

    Any additional comments?

Waiting for the next writings by Joan Didion.

  • God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 51 mins)

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

If you could sum up God Is Not Great in three words, what would they be?

    Excellent, well written

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Hitchens is so smart and speaks so quickly that it's difficult to understand him at times

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

    Too many to list

    Any additional comments?

Glad I listened to this book, but now I want to read it. Hitchens reads so quickly and sometimes quietly, and skips from point to point so quickly that I couldn't fully absorb one major point before he's moved along to the next big point. Great great stuff here. Well argued.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Finally, unabridged. And Davina Porter! The best! Please please please get the rest of her books unabridged. I commute to work and listen to tons of books on my iPod, and Diana Gabaldon's are the best ... good and long and rollicking good stories!
