This recently rediscovered and critically acclaimed 1937 novel tells the story of Janie Crawford, a long-legged, articulate, and fiercely independent African-American woman of the 1930s. Janie's quest for identity includes three marriages and a return to her roots. Despite her struggles, Janie never defines herself by regret, fear, or unrealistic dreams, and refuses to be anything but her own person.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways, and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better....

While "Magic Study" was no where near as good as "Poison Study" I did enjoy the character development and some of the relationships of this book.

I felt like the plot circled back on itself too often. Oh, look Yelena got kidnapped...again. There she goes again, running full tilt into an impossible problem without the help or knowledge of the people who love and care about her. And WOW, Yelena found YET ANOTHER creeper that is raping her or one of her friends. sigh...By the end of this one, I was pretty tired.

I am not really a big "Yelena" fan. But my, oh my how I love Valek! I'm going to have to finish the trilogy just to get another hit.

The most terrible, cheese, awesome story I have read in a while. It's so so so bad. I loved it!

Having only read the first installment I can't be sure, but I think Scalzi is going for an epic Space Opera. I suspect it will end up more of a Space Matinee.

I'm going to give this one 3 stars, because I don't really know how I feel about it. What I really want to say is WTF?

There is so much going on in this book...not all of it realistic.

To tell the truth, I was in love with the story until the very end. The last twist to the story left me felling sad and a little weirded out.

The narrator, Noah Galvin, was pretty great. He made the story much more enjoyable.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Deviants, who enjoy inappropriate sex scenes.

Has 1Q84 turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Not really.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The longer I listened the more I hated this book.

Barely a teenager, Kaylin Neya is a thief, a fugitive and an attempted assassin. She also has a smart mouth, sharp wits and mysterious markings on her skin. All of which make her perfect bait for a child prostitution sting in the city of Elantra - if she survives her first meeting with the Hawks!

What did you like best about Cast in Moonlight: Free Novella? What did you like least?

I liked the idea of having Hawk law inforcment.

What could Michelle Sagara have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

There where lots of professions, races and names that where really hard to tell apart. And most of the characters had so many non verbal mood traits it was hard to tell how anyone felt.

I wish things had been more clear and that so many names hadn't sounded the same.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Flying with...gosh, what was his name? Clint???

    Any additional comments?

It's too bad this book was so confusing. I would have liked to follow Kaylin thru her training. The book was just too unclear to be any fun.

How do you systematically destroy a child with love? It's not something that any parent aspires to do, yet a surprising number come perilously close to achieving it.

What did you like best about this story?

In “Children of the Mind” and now again in “Pretty Boy” OSC has a way of turning villains into real, almost likeable people.

    Any additional comments?

I have despised Bonzo Madrid since I was 12. He was mean to Ender...Ender, whom I love! What’s not to hate about the guy? It is interesting to have my mind changed all these years later.
