  • The Death of Ivan Ilyich: A Leo Tolstoy Short Story

The brilliance of this story is in how a normal bureaucrat, a judge in this case, has a small accident that winds up gradually taking his life. As he deals with this incident, with hope at first and then despair, he comes to terms with his family, his life, and the mediocrities that we all suffer with, except for the exceptional few. This story rings a particularly poignant note for those in early middle age facing the next part of their lives. This story is considered Tolstoy's best.

A story with a powerful message. Quite depressing, but well-written. Narration was good, very much in the style of Tolstoy.

Ensconced in a lovely tropical villa on idyllic Triggerfish Lane, Jim Davenport anticipates the good life to come. But this isn't living -- it's Florida, and the neighborhood is not quite what it seems. It's got overly aggressive Little League parents, drug-free Rastafarians, homicidal hookers, unnatural sex and casual violence. Oh, yes, and there's a psychopathic serial killer-cum-Sunshine-State folklorist named Serge A. Storms living directly across the street.

Judith says: "Excellent Serge--captures Tampa perfectly!"

A fast-paced story with some great observations about everyday life and people. I personally couldn't find anything to like about Serge and this fact diminished the book for me.

Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Clinton says: "Not what I thought it was going to be."

    Story

Jake is a great main character but this book also includes other characters that you really care about. The historical backdrop with a film noir feel makes for an interesting twist with magic and supernaturals incorporated. I liked Monster Hunters but I preferred this book and am eager to get the next one in the series.

Ex-Chief Investigator Arkady Renko is in deep on the “slime line” - the fish-gutting station - in the Polar Star, a Soviet fish factory ship of some 250 souls, almost as many secrets, and a dangerous shipboard sub-culture that cares little for the Party, and less for human life.

I preferred this so much to anything else I have tried by Martin Cruz Smith. I liked the main character and the confinement of the ship was well captured. I really enjoyed this a great deal.

In Long Island, a farmer found a duck pond turned red with blood. On the Lower East Side, two boys playing at a pier discovered a floating human torso wrapped tightly in oilcloth. Blueberry pickers near Harlem stumbled upon neatly severed limbs in an overgrown ditch. Clues to a horrifying crime were turning up all over New York, but the police were baffled: There were no witnesses, no motives, no suspects. The grisly finds that began on the afternoon of June 26, 1897, plunged detectives headlong into the era's most perplexing murder.

The crime itself was interesting as was the inter-play between the press at the time. Otherwise this was overly long and would have benefitted from more research to bolster the facts presented.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

This story maintains the brutal starkness of the original play, but manages to add new material and depth to the established and well-known story. This was excellent and I would highly recommend it.

An American Tragedy is the story of Clyde Griffiths, who spends his life in the desperate pursuit of success. On a deeper, more profound level, it is the masterful portrayal of the society whose values both shape Clyde's ambitions and seal his fate; it is an unsurpassed depiction of the harsh realities of American life and of the dark side of the American dream.

    Story

This book is exceptionally long. I was daunted by the length, but found it utterly compelling. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The minutiae of the writing reveals much about the historical period. This is very different from the movie adaptation "A Place in the Sun" which softens the story. The author does not tell you how to feel about the characters and the events, leaving you to make up your own mind. This is emotionally moving and an excellent story. Narration is also excellent.

The was the first Jack Reacher novel I have read. I found this one a bit exaggerated, over-the-top and very masculine, but enjoyable nevertheless. I will read more Jack Reacher novels. I would recommend it as a first Jack Reacher book as it has made me want to read more.

For his next trick, he’ll relieve Josh Masters, the famous illusionist vying for the affections of Charlie’s friend Victoria, of $60,000 in casino chips stashed in his hotel safe. Revenge would be sweet - if there weren’t a dead redhead floating in Masters’ bathtub and if Masters hadn’t just disappeared in a puff of smoke after cheating at roulette. Convinced that Charlie was in on the scam, the casino’s owners give him an impossible mission....

The First Deadly Sin made him a success. The Tenth Commandment made him today's best-selling suspense novelist. Now Lawrence Sanders presents his biggest and best ever - the nonstop thriller about a "Hotel Ripper" stalking New York's nightside with a Swiss Army knife, and the retired cop named Edward X. Delaney determined to catch him. Or the killer.

Adding the female killer was an interesting twist in this series, but I think that Sanders struggled a bit with writing her. As a result I found her a little hard to relate to and found her motives weak.
