I wanted a nice version to listen to on Christmas Eve and was disappointed in this lack lustre performance. I think I will read it out myself next year.

A bit slow and uninspiring. I only listened to this as part of a course I am doing, otherwise I wouldn't have chosen it. I think it's a bit pretentious.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles introduces Hercule Poirot, mystery fiction's greatest detective. Dapper, brilliant Monsieur Poirot, retired as the Chief of Belgian Police, is summoned to a magnificent English country estate to solve a murder. The victim: a wealthy heiress. The suspects: her fortune-hunting husband, her jealous relatives, even her hired companion. The solution: a deadly scheme that is revealed by the master detective himself.

Solid Agatha Christie, although not very suspenseful as I was able to guess quite easily whodunnit.

There is one positive in this book: the characterization. Otherwise, I'm afraid to say that it was ridiculous. The plot was overly complicated to the point of silliness.

An urgent cry for help brings Poirot to France. But he arrives too late to save his client, whose brutally stabbed body now lies face downwards in a shallow grave on a golf course. But why is the dead man wearing his son's overcoat? And who was the impassioned love-letter in the pocket for? Before Poirot can answer these questions, the case is turned upside down by the discovery of a second, identically murdered corpse....

Normally I enjoy a good Agatha Christie, it is one of my "safe" choices for when I really want something to listen to and don't want to take a chance on trying something new, but this story was a bit too contrived. It was still tolerable to listen to, but not one of Christie's best.

This book started off being quite well observed, but it hit a point where it moves forward in time and after that it became a different book. It was repetitive and boring. Suspending belief only goes so far and then it hits the point where it loses tension and excitement as you stop caring about the characters. Very disappointing after it promises to explore an interesting idea but overdoes it on every front.

The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare, is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

This was terrible. The main character is a poor imitation of James Bond but he is incompetent and I would never want him investigating any murder. All he did was sleep with different women who then were totally unrealistic in their dealings with him. The only reason I listened to the whole story was because the beginning was promising. Unfortunately things declined and by the end I really had nothing good to say about it.

When James Bond is asked to settle a dispute over "ungentlemanly behavior" at an exclusive gambling club, the affair is embarrassing in the extreme, for the accused is the unimpeachable Sir Hugo Drax: business tycoon, popular hero, patriot extraordinaire, and head of the multimillion-dollar Moonraker missile program on which Britain's future defense depends.

I found myself agreeing with other reviewers regarding the slow pace of this book in comparison with other James Bond stories. However, I did enjoy it and liked the female character as well as following the culinary habits of Bond - he always eats the best food!

Those Mr. Big cannot possess he crushes; those who cross him will meet painful ends -- like his beautiful prisoner, Solitaire, and her lover, James Bond. Both are marked as victims in a trail of treachery that leads from New York's black underworld to the dark secrets of the island in the sun that Mr. Big calls his own. Voodoo, sharks, barracuda, time bombs, harpoon guns, torture, and terror are the ingredients for a scalding brew that reaches the boiling point in an eruption of violence.
