"What happened to Roy?????"
If you have invested almost a 100 hours of listening at this point to go on to book 4, be prepared for a disappointing shock! Roy Dotrice, one of the best narrators here, has totally changed course with this one! He pronounces names differently, and the characters voices! Characters we have come to love, like Sam, or for the love of God! Aria now sounds like an old crone!!! I have spent a lot on this series and am completely crushed by this, as a lover of audible books I now realize how important consistent narration is. Be Warned!!! you will have trouble paying attention to the story because of the change in characters.
"This will take you away."
This is a very special book, it has so much depth and is so well written that I felt I had experienced another life after it was done. There are dark places, love and the search for meaning and other times just the raw grit of survival. I love travel, and this is the type of adventure I long to know about but never want to experience first hand. I would recommend this book to anyone who always wondered what it would have been like if you just left everything behind and set off for a foreign country. The main character had no choice and that is why he had to survive abroad no matter what happened, and likely why the spiritual journey that underlies the graphic story line is able to unfold and change both the characters and the reader.
"Perfectly entertaining and original!"
This a fantastic, light, modern fantasy series filled with action, comic relief and a firm foundation due to solid research into both myth and history. I wish I had thought of this idea, we've all been inundated with vampire/werewolf/witch novels, which although I do enjoy, having a slightly different mythical urban fantasy enter the mix is refreshing. Kevin Hearne has done a great job, his characters are well rounded, interesting and reachable, even the Gods seem like you could know them, if you met them. I loved this series, perhaps comparable to Patricia Briggs 'Mercy Thompson' books(I liked those, but loved this), and can't wait for more, it's not epic or legendary, but extremely entertaining and the characters are alive enough to be fondly memorable long after the book is done, especially Oberon (if you decide to listen to these books you'll wish you knew Oberon too). Luke Daniels narration is perfect for this story, if you like fantasy, you can't miss with this one.
