"Beautiful" Niagara Falls, NY USA
This story is very different than the first 2 in this series. This book is a romantic paranormal adventure that surrounds mystery. It is not a scary paranormal story at all.....its more a romantic quirky paranormal. The main characters (Dougald and Alana) are very likeable from the beginning. The spark between them is endearing......very sweet. The narrator did a very good job with the voices. It took a while to get used to her Scottish accent but once I did there was no problem.
I don't read paranormal books that often but I enjoyed this one. You could definitely read any of the books in this series out of order with no problem.
This book is historically detailed with added mystery and light romance. The story reminds me of the (USA) Hatfield and McCoy rivalry but with a Highland twist..
I enjoyed the story and the characters I just wish there was more "spark" between the two main characters (Rory and Diana). There was romance - it just seemed a bit disjointed because the sensuality was limited. Because of this I give this book 3.5 stars.
Overall, this book is NOT a total disappointment. I still really liked it because of the adventure, mystery, and the family struggles. If you enjoy interesting historical stories that are light on steamy romance then this will be a winner for you. If not, you might want to skip this one and go on to the next.
Got this book on a recent sale so I couldn't pass it up.
This one is definitely not the usual damsel in distress historical romance. The heroine, Catherine, is a strong and capable woman and William is a man who has many insecurities. Both of them have troubled pasts that make for a rocky relationship.
The story is interesting, well paced and the characters are intriguing. Although the story started out really good it slowly declined a bit about 3/4 into the book because I found Williams trust issues frustrating There were times I actually wanted to slap William! I know they both had a lot of issues to deal with but his insecurities seemed a bit over the top. Despite this the book is still worth listening to because it does redeem itself as many issues get resolved.
Since this book was a good foundation I will be listening to the others in this series. Also, the narrator is very good and I'm glad he is also narrating the next in the series.
This is the kind of audio book that is difficult to put down. It is a fast paced adventurous story that's fun, sweet, heartwarming and (yes!) charming!
This book is not a deep historical romance.....it's more of a Cinderella type book that every young girl (or young girl at heart) enjoys.
The narration was great. Nell Geisslinger's voice was very pleasant and added to the enjoyment of the book.
If you like old-fashioned fairy tale romances like I do then don't miss out on this one!
A Gentle Rain is an incredibly touching and emotional story. It's the kind of story that really hits home if you have ever had a family member (or close friend) that have been mentally and/or physically handicapped. The love that permeates within these characters feels so genuine and tender. It reminds you of what's important in life and never take loved ones for granted.
My only negative about this audible listen is the sound quality. It has many overdubs that can be a bit distracting but in no way takes away from the story.
This book is more than a romance so don't miss out on this beautiful story!
If you read and liked (Lord of the Isles) the first book in this series and then I'm sure you will enjoy this addition. Although I did like the first book more, this book still delivers an adventurous romantic "fairy" tale that is full of delightful characters amid a story packed with action and light humor.
I will be sure to listen to the next in the series.
Laura Kinsale's books have become some of my favorite books to listen to on Audible. The blending of Laura's writing and the narration of Nicholas Boulton are a double duo that nobody should miss!! This superb combination is a force to be reckoned!
This is a lovely story of two unconventional people who meet and discover what they have learned in life is not necessarily 100% accurate. Samuel is a "ninja" warrior with a disturbing past and Leda is a innocent sweet tempered young lady who ends up in situations she didn't expect. It is a charming story that draws you in from the beginning and when it ends leaves you with the feeling that you've just said goodbye to some old friends. I really wish it was longer!!
Not surprising.....this one is worth a credit for sure!
Highland fling is a well written story that has plenty of history and a romance that is sweet and unforced.
The main characters, Maggie and Edward, are from very different cultures and backgrounds. They learn how to challenge each other and how to resolve family and society issues together. The minor characters add a lot of interest and depth to the story. This book had just enough mystery, intrigue, and romance to keep my attention.
My only negative is that this book felt slow paced for the first half. Because the beginning devotes so much time to character development and history it feels sluggish. The narrator reads a bit slow too which adds to the slow pace feel. Thankfully, the second half speeds up and reveals a great story. I'm glad I didn't give up.
If you enjoy true Historical stories give this one a try. Just make sure you listen on a day when you can sit back, relax, don't give up, then enjoy
I'm a sucker for a good Highlander Romance so I had to give this one a try. Because I've never read anything from this author before I wasn't expecting much so was happy that I found this book a well written light read.
No, this book isn't a deep historical story but its definitely worth reading because of its clever story with twists and turns that keep your attention. The main characters of Ali and Rory very likable and are written with class and the secondary characters add dimension to the story. The time travel aspect has some predictable moments but I really appreciated the plot twists that I didn't anticipate. The story has a nice romantic progression so it didn't drag......and I really liked the ending. I will check out this author's other books.
The narrator was good with all the characters except Ali's. Ali is from New York and even though her accent is different from the other characters it definitely isn't a New York accent. (Ali sometimes sounded like she was the New England area of the USA). But overall she did a good job.
Laura Kinsale has become one of my favorite authors so when this book became available on Audible I couldn’t wait to listen.
“For My Lady’s Heart” is totally different than the other books written by Laura Kinsale and therefore more difficult to review. Like the others, it meticulously written with vivid depth and strong characters. Because the story is written in the “Middle English style” it took me a while to get into the rhythm of the language. As a result, this was a bit distracting (in the beginning) because I lost some connection with the characters and the story. (I don’t think this will happen to everyone….it was just an adjustment for me in the first few chapters).
That being said, I recovered and began to appreciate the fact that this book did not follow the usual romance novel blueprint but delivered a refreshing, complex and fascinating story. The hero, Ruck, is a strong, devoted, loyal and moral man and the heroine, Melanthe, is a beautiful, deceitful, nasty, and cold woman. Together they make the most unusual and unforgettable pair.
Really love the narration of Nicholas Boulton. He NEEDS to narrate more books on Audible.
I know there will be some that will find this book “too unusual” but if you are looking for something diverse with substance I think you will enjoy it.
I really pondered what to say about this book because I normally love Robyn Carr books. I liked the main characters and the story was interesting enough.....it just didn't keep my attention. Not sure if it was the story itself, the narration, or the combination of both. I've listened to books read by Alison Larkin before that were good but this one was a bit distracting.
Overall, I'm disappointed because I love this author and I expected more.
