In the summer of 1974, a 14-year-old girl in Dolton, Illinois, had a dream - a dream to become an actress. But it was a long way from the South Side of Chicago to Hollywood, and it didn’t help that she’d recently dropped out of the school play, The Ugly Duckling, or that the Hollywood casting directors she wrote to replied that "professional training was a requirement". But the funny thing is, it all came true....

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't know much about Jane Lynch except for her portrayal of the aggressive lawyer on The "L" Word and the competitive but complicated coach in Glee. After hearing her life story, I now know her as a funny, honest, reflective individual. She is candid about her addiction to alcohol, the journey she has taken to get to where she is now, and the many "happy" accidents that have brought her so far along. Her bright, positive outlook is contagious and refreshing. I was sorry when my life got in the way of hearing about hers. This was a true joy to listen to, and I was sorry when the story ended. I could have listened for hours longer.

Three generations of Roths live together in a crowded tenement flat. Long-widowed Manya is the family's head and its heart. But Manya is no soft touch, except, perhaps, where her granddaughter Elka is concerned. Precocious Elka is her closest companion and confidante. Through Elka's eyes we come to know the fascinating characters who move in and out of the Roths' lives.

What did you like best about Up from Orchard Street? What did you like least?

The author provides a peek into a world far removed from middle class America in the 21st century. It is worth listening to for the keen insight it provdes into life inside NewYork tenements through the eyes of a young girl. The story moves slowly, however, and I would have enjoyed it much more if it were considerably shorter.

England, 1959: Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Secret Keeper?

This was a really good story that became great when a completely unexpected twist was added to it. Cleverly crafted, and well narrated.

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens. Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries.

    Any additional comments?

I was hesitant about listening to this book after some of the violent scenes in the first book. However, the characters were compelling and I wanted to know what was going to happen to them. I found this book to be gentler than the first and more to my liking. All of the details build a rich world that is hard to leave. Looking forward to book 3.

Maisie Dobbs isn't just any young housemaid. Through her own natural intelligence - and the patronage of her benevolent employers - she works her way into college at Cambridge. After the War I and her service as a nurse, Maisie hangs out her shingle back at home: M. DOBBS, TRADE AND PERSONAL INVESTIGATIONS. But her very first assignment soon reveals a much deeper, darker web of secrets, which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War and the love she left behind.

What made the experience of listening to Maisie Dobbs the most enjoyable?

This was my first encounter with Maisie Dobbs and I am hooked. Rita Barrington's narration in this story was fantastic. Maisie is an interesting, independent, and strong woman, and someone I can't wait to meet in future books in the series.

Maisie Dobbs is back, and this time she has been hired to find a wealthy grocery magnate's daughter who has fled from home. What seems a simple case at first becomes complicated when Maisie learns of the recent violent deaths of three of the heiress's old friends. Is there a connection between her mysterious disappearance and the murders? Who would kill such charming young women? As Maisie investigates, she discovers that the answers to all her questions lie in the unforgettable agony of The Great War.

Would you be willing to try another one of Kim Hicks’s performances?

The demeanor and personality of Maisie Dobbs as portrayed by this narrator is very different from the way the narrator of the first story in the series played the part. The voice of Maisie as read in this story comes across as very somber and serious. I much preferred Rita Barrington's narration of the the first book. Her portrayal gave Maisie a much richer, lighter personality.
