  • Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy: A Righteous Gentile vs. the Third Reich

    • UNABRIDGED (22 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Eric Metaxas
    • Narrated By Malcolm Hillgartner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready
    Overall
    (1854)
    Performance
    (1296)
    Story
    (1321)

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A more objective view of Bonhoeffer's life. Still trying to find evidence of his being a 'righteous gentile'. Listens like someone's doctorial thesis. Dry, overly verbose, way more detail than anyone could ask for.
    Try the abridged version.

Would you ever listen to anything by Eric Metaxas again?

    probably not.

Have you listened to any of Malcolm Hillgartner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no, but he did a good job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Bonhoeffer?

    some

    Any additional comments?

Metaxas needs to decide if this is a work of practical theology or a work of historical biography. Trying to be both isn't working.

In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

The never-before-told full story of the history-changing break-in at the FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania, by a group of unlikely activists - quiet, ordinary, hardworking Americans - that made clear the shocking truth and confirmed what some had long suspected, that J. Edgar Hoover had created and was operating, in violation of the U.S. Constitution, his own shadow Bureau of Investigation.

What did you like best about The Burglary? What did you like least?

Revealing. Sheds light on a heroic act performed by ordinary people. Waaaaaaaaaaaay to long.

Would you recommend The Burglary to your friends? Why or why not?

Only to those unfamiliar with the Media, Pa break-in; then only in Cliffs Notes.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    Pretty much.

Did The Burglary inspire you to do anything?

    no

In the last days of the First World War, socialist revolution swept across Germany, sending Kaiser Wilhelm into exile and transforming Berlin into a battleground. But for Detective Inspector Nikolai Hoffner and his young assistant, Hans Fichte, the revolution is a mere inconvenience. Four women from the slums of Berlin have turned up dead, all with identical markings etched into their backs, and Hoffner and Fichte have spent the better part of six weeks trying to crack the bizarre case.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. Philip Kerr does a much better job with the gritty world of the Berlin Police. The title subject is often lost in the twists and turns of the plot.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Include the title subject more in the story. If not, change the title.

What about Simon Prebble’s performance did you like?

    Competent.

Did Rosa inspire you to do anything?

    no.

  • Profiles in Folly: History's Worst Decisions and Why They Went Wrong

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 42 mins)

    • Narrated By Scott Peterson
    Overall

    (13)
    Story
    (11)

Although Axelrod investigates some dumb decisions by stupid people and some evil decisions by evil people, the overwhelming majority of these decisions were made by good, smart people whose poor judgment produced disastrous, often irreversible results. The 35 compelling and often poignant stories range from ancient times to today.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, not really. Each chapter opening creates expectation which is never really fulfilled. The examples discussed could all be categorized as something other than "Folly".

What three words best describe Scott Peterson’s voice?

    Average, sometimes breathless.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

Beneath the towering bleached ribs of a dead, ancient beast lies New Crobuzon, a squalid city where humans, Re-mades, and arcane races live in perpetual fear of Parliament and its brutal militia. The air and rivers are thick with factory pollutants and the strange effluents of alchemy, and the ghettos contain a vast mix of workers, artists, spies, junkies, and whores.
