I love all of Tamora Pierce's books, but the Beka Cooper books are my favorites because of the gritty atmosphere and Beka's ruthless practicality.
Pierce's use of slang in these books is realistic and highly entertaining. (After reading an interview with the author I bought the reference book she mentions, Slang Through the Ages.)
I had some quibbles about the plot twists in this book, but the style is, as always, highly enjoyable.
