Yes, it is a book that is perfect for a book club read or to debate over with a friend.
The entire book made you feel like you were in on a dirty little secret that you never quite got off your chest. That was both great and frustrating about being the listener. You were happy yet wanted something big to happen. It was thought inspiring.
I tend to like to have resolution when I am done reading or listening. This book offers a few areas that make you wonder what happened. But I do believe that is the science of the writing as well, to make you fill in some of the blanks with your own perspective. Which is why this is a great group read!
I really enjoyed this book, not because the content was enjoyable, but because it allowed me another opportunity to awaken! I have recently transitioned from Vegetarian to Strick Vegetarian on a Vegan Plant-Based Diet. What I gained from this book was that we are quite possibly a product of our society. Had we grown up in another country our views on pets, food and clothes may greatly differ (or not). Point being, most of the people who become vegetarian or vegan struggle with being "perfect" and we tend to beat ourselves up when we make a mistake (for those of us who have) for a vegetarian that could mean accidentally eating a meat byproduct or a vegan accidentally eating cheese. This book helps to connect the dots as to why we may psychologically behave the way we do. With that said, the main point of the book in my opinion is to literally shock you into understanding the American culture. There is a ton that I "knew" but somehow listening to every word hit home in a way that was bigger than ever before...bigger than the China Study! The author is very detailed and her research is very extensive. I was captivated by the obvious amount of time and energy she has committed to not only understand this subject herself but share it with us. Listening to this book solidified my choice to love my dogs and not eat meat or purchase animal products to wear. You cannot listen to this book without somehow being changed forever. This book is not just for vegs, it really is a social study that would benefit everyone to have more knowledge. The book is well researched and I believe it can provide an outlook to everyone.
This series was absolutely eye-opening and amazing! This series takes a scientific approach (the best type) to the entire world of nutrition. It is very easy to follow and understand. Prof. Andling is compelling and her attitude is very open and realistic. I have recently become a strict vegetarian on an entirely plant-based vegan diet (no eggs, cheese, milk, animal products). This series even helped me to better understand how our body works, how food is digested, why getting your vitamins and minerals from whole foods is better than supplements, as well as how to create complete proteins, very essential for a plant-based diet. My Husband is a meat eater and I learned why it is so important to use meat as a side dish in a sea of whole foods and have implemented that in his diet as well. This book also discusses many diseases and other dietary issues that you may experience including real life examples and it will definitely make you assess what types of meds, vitamins, supplements, etc. that you are currently on. It also discussing "dieting" and how our body responds. Towards the end there is an assessment to help you reach your goals or better understand your future nutrition. I am listening to it again! I am also ordering the DVD to send to my inlaws and will keep it handy for the future as each section may apply to your life in different stages or for different people you support. The only downside is she talks about a reference book throughout that we would normally have a copy of, I tried to find that book on Amazon with no luck thus far. I would love to have this entire series in a textbook form. I must say, science has changed so much in the last 10-20 years and I am sure that many things we believe are healthful may indeed drastically change in the future thanks to the progression of science and studies. So I look forward to the updated version one day! P.S. thanks to this course I have a newfound interest in doing more research, as nutrition and fitness which she does talk in great detail about as well, is really our only insurance! Health = Wealth!!!!!
I am a distance runner and spend hours running alone and even though I run on a well known trail in a great part of the city, as a woman, I can never be careful enough. This book has great information on trusting your gut instinct. It gave examples and cues on what to beware of or look out for. My favorite part was that he said it is okay to let anyone know that you are uncomfortable or that you don't talk to strangers. This is a concept you give up around age 13. I learned some great tips and would recommend this book to everyone! I heard about this book from Dr. Jenn Berman on her Cosmo Radio Show. Love!
Without Conscience by Robert D. Hare. That book was about getting into the mind of psychopaths. Only that book focused on con men types and this book focuses on your internal fear to guide you.
He sounds very official - his experience as a detective comes through his voice. It's a character in itself.
Hopefully all of them!
Absolutely! Even if my friend is an extrovert it is very insightful. We all know both personality types as a whole, this book provides a perspective that we do not normally get.
What I liked was that first of all, it confirmed that I am "normal" HA! But also I loved the discussion on different cultures and what is typical outside of America, such as Asian culture.
This book made me do tons of research and it started a conversation!
I have listened to over about 100 books, so that is a tough one. I will say that I absolutely enjoyed this book because it offered a point of view backed by science and I was not expecting the book to be more of a learning experience. I was expecting a bit of self help. I was pleasantly surprised. Loved it!
I learned to take moments and observe why I do what I do. This is very useful!
Yes! It is read by the author Jon Acuff and he is absolutely fun and relatable! I enjoyed every minute I listened to him.
I just finished The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg and it was the perfect follow up to that audiobook. They are similar in the sense that you are in control of your own domain, but I learned from Habit why I choose what I choose, and I learned from Start, how to choose what I want to choose. So they compliment each other. Both are a life process and neither is a quick fix to anything. Loved both!
No, but I will now.
Not really, the entire book was worth the listen!
I heard about this book from the EntreLeadership Podcast and am glad I did!
Sure, this book was fun and had a good plot, it was worth the enjoyment of listening. I recommend a glass of wine and a hot bubble bath to complement the book.
She sounded like Evelyn Lozada to me in a way, her voice was really great and she moved into and out of each charactor in a perfect manner! She was the highlight to the story.
There are sound effects in the book and I was not a huge fan of that, it was a bit cheesy, although I get that it added a movie like setting, I prefer to use my imagination.
First of all the writing style is great! The narrators (yes, plural) really made the story line and its complexity hit home. I greatly enjoyed hearing both a male and female voice for the two lead charactors. The storyline is filled with everything you could want in a great book...and hopefully future film. It has romance, suspense, deception, mystery, a true thriller. It has so many twists and turns, I could never guess ahead and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, I was way off! It kept me wanting to listen!
The ending! You will never see it coming!
I don't believe so, but now I will especially Julia Whelan's, her voice was captivating!
This book will not "move" you in a feel good kind of way, it is quite Stephen King/Dan Brown - esq! It will keep you thinking!
It is really a must listen. Even if this genre is not your typical, I would recommend giving it a shot. It is crazy...in a good book kinda way!
This book series was AMAZING! Everything from the writing, the plot, the characters, the reader. This is what writing should be all about. Simply WOW!
