  • Lesser Beasts: A Snout-to-Tail History of the Humble Pig

As historian Mark Essig reveals in Lesser Beasts, swine have such a bad reputation for precisely the same reasons they are so valuable as a source of food: they are intelligent, self-sufficient, and omnivorous. What's more, he argues, we ignore our historic partnership with these astonishing animals at our peril.

This is literally a historical account of the pig, swine, hog, boar... Whatever you want to call it. Its history with people, who eats it and who doesn't (and why), and a history of farming the pig from antiquity to modern day.

Narrator did a fine job, but I had to take a star away for what could possible be the worlds worst Homer Simpson impression (it is unclear that the narrator has ever heard Homer Simpson based on it, in fact)

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century.

The ever romantic and unconventional Anne proves to be a great main character for the novel, but for me the book ran out of steam at around the 3/4 mark.

Glad I listened, but probably don’t need to listen again.

Your toddler throws a tantrum in the middle of a store. Your preschooler refuses to get dressed. Your fifth-grader sulks on the bench instead of playing on the field. Do children conspire to make their parents’ lives endlessly challenging? No - it’s just their developing brain calling the shots! In this pioneering, practical book, Daniel J. Siegel, neuropsychiatrist and author of the best-selling Mindsight, and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson demystify the meltdowns and aggravation, explaining the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures.

As a new parent these. Seem like good strategies but my son is a bit too young to put them to the test. I’ll have to register when he is around 3-5 and make use of them at that time.

As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

Great thriller novel with elements of Philosophy, Science, and great characters with fantastic narration.

While not quite as heavy handed as Ready Player One, there are hints of 80's nostalgia, and as with The Prestige this is an edge of your seat story with big implications.

Definitely worth a listen, and should make a great movie.

  • Redefining Reality: The Intellectual Implications of Modern Science

No subject is bigger than reality itself, and nothing is more challenging to understand, since what counts as reality is undergoing continual revision and has been for centuries. The quest to pin down what's real and what's illusory is both philosophical and scientific, a metaphysical search for ultimate reality that goes back to the ancient Greeks. For the last 400 years, this search has been increasingly guided by scientists, who create theories and test them in order to define and redefine reality.

What I thought was going to be a philosophy class turned into much more. Professor Gimbel gives us here a great primer on a variety of scientific fields (Physics, Biology, Psychology, Genetics, Technology, AI) and the implications on our understanding of reality that sprung forth once those fields developed and matured.

This is a great course for anyone looking for a crash course on almost the entirety of modern scientific findings.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes tales are rightly ranked among the seminal works of mystery and detective fiction. Included in this collection are all four full-length Holmes novels and more than forty short masterpieces - from the inaugural adventure A Study in Scarlet to timeless favorites like “The Speckled Band” and more. At the center of each stands the iconic figure of Holmes - brilliant, eccentric, and capable of amazing feats of deductive reasoning.

A huge listening endeavor that pays off many times over. Great narration throughout.

The short story nature of the books makes it easy to jump in and listen for a drive, then on a walk later, or while doing errands.

It seems they front loaded it with the best material, as it did become less interesting and complex in the later books, but still enjoyable.

Overall one of my best listens.
