The Darling is Hannah Musgrave's story, told emotionally and convincingly years later by Hannah herself. A political radical and member of the Weather Underground, Hannah has fled America to West Africa, where she and her Liberian husband become friends and colleagues of Charles Taylor, the notorious warlord and now ex-president of Liberia. When Taylor leaves for the United States in an effort to escape embezzlement charges, he's immediately placed in prison.

As I looked through the Audible collection, something about this book caught my attention and made me buy it. I knew nothing of the author or the story but I am so glad that I gave it a chance.

As a "radical" child of the sixties, I could relate to the life-progression of the main character. Her experiences were moving and very well presented. The narrator was excellent, too, and I would highly reccommend the book .

I have listened to over 400 books and I have learned to choose my books very carefully in order to avoid disappointment and wasted time!

I rarely choose a book with a rating of less than 4-Stars and, due to this rule, I have had the pleasure of listening to 100's of great books.

I can only member one other book which I purchased of 4 stars or greater which I did not like and that was over four years ago....until now!

This book was rated as a 4.1 Stars while I only have given it 2 stars.

The Sci-fi plot-line is weak at best but the writing is absolutely awful.

The further I got into the book, the more obvious it was that this book could not be saved!

Towards the end of the book (the last 45 minutes or so) I was close to giving-up on going on to another book.

The only reason I finished the book was so that I could write this review with the integrity of a person who actually finished the book!

By the time the book ended, I felt as though I had listened to someone scratching their fingers nails on a chalk board.

So the question I find myself asking is how so many listeners found this book to be worthy of four stars?

The answer may lie in the fact that the book is classified as a Sci-Fi book and, it has always appeared to me that Sci-fi listeners sometimes mix-up what the see as a good story line for a well written book.

In this case, I feel the book is neither a good story nor is it well written.

There certainly will not be a Replay iof this book!

I had just read, "Silent, Joe," my first book from T. Jefferson Parker.

Based on Sielnt Joe, I was eager to read more of Parker's books.

I thought that I had found another Michael Connolly!

    Boy, was I wrong!

When I choose a book, I put alot of weight on the ratings of other listeners.

Black Hole was rated above 4 stars which almost always means that I will like the book.

    Not this time!

This book went from good, to fair to pathetic over the course of a dreadfully disappointing story-line.

This book had promise, but that was about it.

If you haven't read Silent Joe, I would encourage you to do so.

Having said that, I urge you to avoid Black Water.

The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

I am very careful about the books which I choose to download.

To be honest, I like modern detective books (Michael Connolly) and I like well-written mysteries..

As I listened into the 2nd hour of The Good House, I was wondering when the murder would take place. I was wondering what dramatic event would occur that would need to be resolved throughout the remainder of the story.

The book had a definite flow but I was swimming against the tide expecting something familiar. What I got instead, was something totally unexpected. An absolutely wonderful book which, at the same time, wove the characters and the feel of a charming New England town into the stark presentation of the alcoholic mind of Hildy, the main character.

If you have ever known or experienced addiction of any kind, exploring the mind of Hildy is a spell-binding revelation of how the addictive mind can survive, thrive and then dive into utter despair.

This book was so well written that I had trouble turning off my I Phone.

To top it off, I can say that I have never experienced any better narration. Usually when I finish a great book, I immediately search for other books by the same author, as I did with the Good House.

But this time, I made a point of searching for other stories with the same narrator and what did I find? I found The Darling, a wonderful book with the same narrator that I listened to three years ago. The narrator was so compelling that I have once again downloaded The Darling and will listen to it again tonight as I go for my nightly walk with my beautiful boxer.

Please listen to the The Good House. You will be glad that you did.

It is very unusual that I so thoroughly disagree with the ratings given a book by my fellow Audible readers. To start with, the writing of the author is at best mediocre and that is being kind. The story itself is a shallow and predictable presentation of a modern day police story. If someone is looking for a well-written and insightful modern detective author, simply read any of Michael Connelly's books as the worst of Michael Connelly is more convincing and more engaging than this shallow book. (Check out "The Poet" as one example.)Finally, the narration is in keeping with the book as it is certainly acceptable but it is not in any way engaging.I am very careful to choose books with an average reader rating of 4.0 and above. This effort has paid off in well over 500 titles that I have purchased. This book is one of just a small handful of books which has been an exception to my process of choosing only winners.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Would you listen to Gone Girl again? Why?

After listening to over 200 audiobooks, it's near imposilbe for any one book to claim the title as "the best book I have listened to." This book was on it's why to that rating. The book is so clever, so deep, so ingenious in it's plot and delivery, that I was sure that I would give the book a five-star rating. That is, until the last 45 minutes or so when the story had to end.

It might be true to say that such a tremendous book could not possibly have an equally fantastic ending. It might be true, but it seems to be a cop-out. The ending of this book is, let's say, disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I still highly reccommend the book...no doubt. The truth is, this book could have had three or four different endings and, if the author did truly have several endings in mind, I think she chose the weakest one.

Deinitely read the book. You might just love the ending. If so, it will likely be the best book that you have ever listend to!

What does Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I think that their ability to convey the inner dialogues of the two main characters was extremely valuable in understanding the nuances of their thoughts.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you’ve ever loved a dog - or even patted a dog - this book, told from the perspective of man’s best friend, will tug at your heartstrings...and won’t let go until long after Welch performs the last word. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively and by listening very closely to the words of his master.

I have learned not to purchase any books rated fewer than 4 stars by Audible listeners. The Survivors Club is only the second time I have disagreed with the ratings of other listeners.

I had just listened to two other Lisa Garder books Which were really good soI thought the Surivors Club would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately,Inwas wrong.

As other listeners pointed-out, the narration was sub-par. The narrator had trouble with male voices and one in particular was portrayed so poorly that it was aggravating.

I would have still recommended the book if the story-line itself had been believable and engaging. The story ( and the writing) were so unlike the othernLisanGardner books, I had to investigate how this could be.

A it turns out, this book was released years earlier and this would explain why the quality of the story and the writing were not fully developed.

I would urge you to stay away from this book.

Adrian McKinty is the real thing He is a captivating author and the narration is over the top spell-binding. If I could have rated this a "10" instad of a "5", I would have done so. I am now going to listen the other two books in this trilogy!!
