For Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of the Duke University men's basketball team, certain words have special importance and force. Coach K uses them every day to energize, motivate, and teach his players how to be winners on the court and in every aspect of their lives. Now, in Beyond Basketball, he offers 40 short, hard-hitting audio essays that will educate and inspire. Each is centered on an important keyword and illustrated with anecdotes from his personal experiences.

Cathy Morison says: "A little disjointed"
    "yechhh. . .motivational folderol"
    Overall

I love good sports audiobooks that give you insight into the sport. There isn't any such insight discussed here. It's just Tony Robbins like motivational junk. Awful cheesy statements on "100% happiness".

  • Zombie Spaceship Wasteland: A Book by Patton Oswalt

Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained. He remembers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Readers are also treated to several graphic elements, including a vampire tale for the rest of us and some greeting cards with a special touch.

Arlette says: "It's deep. Deal with it."

Oswalt thinks himself cultured and literate. Unfortunately he sucks as a writer when he tries to overextend himself. This guy is just a medium talent comedian. Bleh. . .I have read some crappy comedy but I feel dirty after listening to Oswalt fill up time as he extensively goes over a crappy comedian's schtick (political jokes, topical humor, etc).

DONT BUY THIS! It sucks. . .get the first part if u can

If u must listen to it then wait for the public library to get it.

This guy sucks after 30 minutes. Fat pompous idiot.

“Buy the ticket, take the ride,” was a favorite slogan of Hunter S. Thompson, and it pretty much defined both his work and his life. Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone showcases the roller-coaster of a career at the magazine that was his literary home.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Sure but not enthusiastically. . . good narration doesn't involve aping the speech of hunter s thompson on amphetamines. . .I just want the prose not the whole lump of crap entourage (Johnny Depp, Fear and Loathing hype) that usually comes this guy

Who was your favorite character and why?

    N/A

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Phil Gigante?

uhh. . .the guy who read "white noise" or "blood meridian" or Harry Dean Stanton who narrated a previous "Fear and Loathing"

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

    meh

In the midst of the Go-Go '90s, the culture of greed infused the MIT campus. A small blackjack club sprang up, dedicated to counting cards and beating the house at major casinos around the country. The Club grew slowly at first, but by the late 1990s, the right people had come up with the right system to take some of the world's most sophisticated casinos for all they were worth.

What did you like best about 21? What did you like least?

    Narrator did fine job.
    The counting system sounds fascinating.
The lead character, Kevin, sounds like he has every Donald Trump book in existence.
    I don't think I would like him.
He really critiques his mentor's bad teeth.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

More strategy. I hate hearing about them sucking up to celebrities and cheerleaders.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Learning to count cards and anything with the Mickey character.

Could you see 21 being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Never. . .uhh maybe Kevin Spacey. Kate Bosworth is too dumb to pull off the math whiz character but whatever.

    Any additional comments?

Execution is fine. The lead character is not very likable.

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions.

Welcome to the paperless (or "audiobook") edition of More Information Than You Require, a further compendium of COMPLETE WORLD KNOWLEDGE assembled and illumined by John Hodgman, a Famous Minor Television Personality. It contains all of the half-truths, fake trivia, amazing made-up facts, and molemanic lore as the paper edition, narrated here by Resident Expert John Hodgman, occasionally interrupted by this veritable extravaganza of illustrious and sometimes presumptuous guests.

Hodgman recycles some junk from "America" audiobook. Also he milks awkward pauses until they are far from amusing anymore

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

    Chris says: "Bleak but Fascinating"
    "Richard Poe is sensational"
    Overall

Great reader who really uses the material to scare the beejeezus out of you.

McCarthy has. . .uhh. . .kind of a dark side in quite a few of his books and this text can drag on quite a bit.

If I was reading I would blow off a lot of the landscape exposition so I appreciate the breathy inflections.

I have never read a guy who has such an incredible vocabulary for landscapes. I actually knew the term arroyo before I read but that doesn't even scratch the. . .uhh. . .firmament.

McCarthy uses dramatic King James Old Testamenty grammar too.

    "Brillant Ensemble"
    Overall

Have no idea of text but heard the pictures of Supreme Court Justices' genitalia were vulgar & simultaneously disappointing. (?)

The reading lends a lot to the comedy & despite the stigma of being a nonreader (which Stewart mentions at beginning & aptly so) I adored this reading. You appreciate the comedy much better with the inflections.

Wonderful reading by very competent voices.

Jack Gladney teaches Hitler studies at a liberal arts college in Middle America where his colleagues include New York expatriates who want to immerse themselves in "American magic and dread". Jack and his fourth wife, Babette, bound by love, fear of death, and four ultramodern offspring, navigate the usual rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. Then a lethal black cloud floats over their lives, an airborne "toxic event", an industrial accident.

(If you feel he's a bit flat, as some folks do, it helps to bump the speed up a notch if you are using an iPod).

Read it had some humor but I found it occasionally, maybe it's just me. I saw the humor more at the end.

    Thank you Kimberly!
