  • Here Burns My Candle

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Liz Curtis Higgs
    • Narrated By Liz Curtis Higgs

A mother who cannot face her future.... A daughter who cannot escape her past. Lady Elisabeth Kerr is a keeper of secrets. A Highlander by birth and a Lowlander by marriage, she honors the auld ways, even as doubts and fears stir deep within her.

Her husband, Lord Donald, has secrets of his own, well hidden from the household, yet whispered among the town gossips.

Lynn Diener says: "Liz does it again!"
"Read it yourself instead of listening"

If I were you, I would skip the audible version and read the book yourself. I don't know if it is just me, but I am a much better narrator in my head than the author of this story. I read another book by this same author and loved it. This was the first audible from Liz that I got and was a bit disappointed. It is very hard to get into the story. There were much better choices to narrate in my opinion.
Normally I am all for the author narrating their own work because they know the story and how to bring it alive, but in this case, not so much. I only got through the first few chapters before giving up............

In short - Story is good, narration is not.

  • The Atonement Child

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Francine Rivers
    • Narrated By Ruth Ann Phimister

The Atonement Child explores the devastating consequences of rape and resulting pregnancy on innocent victims, their families, and their faith.

Meaghan says: "another awesome read from Francine"
    "Good story, terrible narration"

The story was a bit hard to get into since the narrator sounded like an old lady. Ruth sounds like she is trying to make her voice soft, but instead takes on an old lady scratchy nasaly sound. All the characters have the same 'manly' tone and the main character is made to sound like a small child rather than a soft young woman.

This is a book I would probably rather read than listen to. A great book can be ruined by the wrong narrator, and this just about happened for me.

  • Persuade Me

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Juliet Archer
    • Narrated By Jilly Bond
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Anna Elliot is stuck in the past. No one can compare to Rick Wentworth, the man she was persuaded to give up. Meanwhile, Rick's moved on - and up. He's got a successful career and a carefully controlled love life where his heart doesn't get a look in. When they meet again, can she persuade him that their lost love is worth a second chance?

What made the experience of listening to Persuade Me the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the modern adaptation of one of my Favorite Jane Austen books. I am a huge Jane Austen fan and love those types of stories, but every now and then, it is nice to read a more up to date love story.

What about Jilly Bond’s performance did you like?

She was very good at giving each character a different voice and her inflections and tones were very helpful in getting the listener involved in the story.
It was not boring or monotone to listen to. She did a very good job.

If you could take any character from Persuade Me out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Captain Wentworth. Because I am a romantic.

  • Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Rob Lowe
    • Narrated By Rob Lowe

A teen idol at 15, an international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences. Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.

Jonelle says: "Much to My Surprise-I really Enjoyed This!"
    "Best Surprise"
What does Rob Lowe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Having the author narrate his own story was absolutely wonderful. He knew the context of his stories and therefore the tone was spot on. He was very good at the impersonations and you just got the feel of sitting down with Rob Lowe while he told you his stories.
He knew what the mood was at certain times and was able to convey that in a way that a reader can only assume.
He is a fantastic aura-tor and it was very easy to listen to and definitely something I looked forward to continuing every chance I got.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Wanted to, but unable to. 10 hours straight is a long time!

    Any additional comments?

Very good experience. I was sad when it was over.
