Why has one game, alone among the thousands of games invented and played throughout human history, not only survived but thrived within every culture it has touched? What is it about its 32 figurative pieces, moving about its 64 black and white squares according to very simple rules, that has captivated people for nearly 1,500 years? Why has it driven some of its greatest players into paranoia and madness, and yet is hailed as a remarkably powerful intellectual tool?

Bob says: "a must-read for all chess lovers"
    "Not just another chess book"
    Overall

Great book. This is not an instructional chess book as most other books on the subject. This book is a more about the history of the game and its evolution. A great read for those who enjoy the game and want to know a little bit more about it. The immortal game interludes will facinate any chess player. Hope this helps, enjoy.

  • The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable

Maverick thinker Nassim Nicholas Taleb had an illustrious career on Wall Street before turning his focus to his black swan theory. Not all swans are white, and not all events, no matter what the experts think, are predictable. Taleb shows that black swans, like 9/11, cannot be foreseen and have an immeasurable impact on the world.

"Good intro to randomness- Rohit Soans"
    Overall

This was my first foray into randomness and it was quite enjoyable. Dr. Taleb does a nice job delineating his theory and provides ample support for his claims. However, his argument seemed to wear on and on without really becoming any stronger as the book went on and I was not convinced by his line of thought. For those interested in randomness this seems to be a very good introduction and will tell you if you want to explore the subject further. - Rohit Soans

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

Robert says: "Over before you know it"
"The best defense of capitalism- Rohit Soans"
    Overall

This is a long listen. However, this is a true classic and one of the best defenses of capitalism ever written. Although Rand's objectivism philosophy may not appeal to all, the ideals of free thinking and evils of unsolicited government interference/control are all well illustrated. The book as a whole is good, but some of the rants these characters make are absolutely brilliant. A book that truly makes you want to be productive.
The length is the only real drawback, the pearls are some times muddled in too much narrative and this can sometimes get old, but overall this was a great listen.-Rohit Soans

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Corby says: "Very informative, fun to listen to"
    "Great Listen- Rohit Soans"
    Overall

This is great audiobook. The book itself is a great review of scientific knowledge and provides a great introduction to the many branches of science. This book hooked me on a variety of topics that i found very interesting. The narration is also perfect and seems to really get the message across. A must read for those who want at least a cursory knowledge of how the natural world works. You will definitely be interested all the way through. -Soans
