I thought this was a really interesting idea for a dystopic novel. I was moved along by the story at a good pace. The characters were likable. The action and violence was real but not too much to take. I thought the romance was quite steamy.
Basically, its The Bachelor set in a fantasy setting. The story talks a lot about clothes and the friendship and cattiness between girls. Our hero is fairly admirable and likable. She's torn between two boys (so tired of this) and since I had a hard time liking one of them so I was always vaguely irritated by her indecision. Her mother is awful. I wont continue to the next book. I don't care enough to spend a credit on it.
I was really excited about this one since so many people seemed to like it. I checked out a few bad reviews but I figured it was the usual overly critical people. But actually, they are right. The story idea is fine but it is poorly written. There are so many times when characters say something or do something that is out of character. Our main character is a highly-trained, bad-ass assassin (which requires self-discipline) but then she speaks and acts like an impatient 12 year old. She loves fancy clothes, but then complains about them.
The end result is that you don't really care about any of the characters - they're shallow and unreliable.
You can tell the author is not writing about things she knows about or has done research on because the scenes lack depth of detail and in some cases, sense. And there are lots of missed opportunities to add action, danger and interest.
To top it all off, I think the narrator really messes up the intent and delivery of a lot of the lines so that everyone sounds spoiled and melodramatic all the time. I seriously considered dropping the audio to actually read the book to make sure the reader wasn't the one ruining it for me.
First, beautifully narrated. Second, well-written with a lot of really interesting and charming ideas. Third, a lot of action to move you through the story. Overall, a good listen.
I've finished the whole series and can say that they are all quite fun, well written, and interesting. The author handles time travel in a very intelligent and unique way so you're not spending too much time in your head working out the paradoxes. The rest of the plot isn't groundbreaking, but its sense of humor and well-balanced romance make it a worthwhile listen. It's very British and the romance scenes are fairly chaste so it's a good listen for most ages.
from anticipation waiting for the next book to come out! Everything I loved about the first book - real danger, real choices, real dirt and grit. Nobody is perfect and the situation is awful. But there are moments of fun, and laughter and sweetness. We are taking the journey with Evie and I enjoy the heartache. Great book!
I wasn't sure how I felt about the change in narrator initially because I have become attached to Cassie's (and others) voice and cadence, but I very quickly forgot about it as the story moved along. This narrator may even be better! As for the story, it's pretty much what you can expect - lots of action, humor, and sexy teasing. I don't want to give anything away but we learn a lot more about Cassie and Pritkin. Nothing gets tied up, but its really more about the journey than the destination!
I continue to be impressed with these books and this author. This is SUCH a fun story - a good balance of likeable characters, story, and smoking hot sex (but not every 5 seconds - it supplements the story). It is less weighed-down then the first one with world-building details. The story is not silly, or shallow or coarse and I never rolled my eyes. I even got a little misty-eyed over a few scenes. I will absolutely re-listen to these.
The first chapter is a little dense with details, but stick with it. She has a lot information to convey for you to understand the story, but once she gets past that, you are off and running! Its a really interesting world with all the wonderful little steampunk details to make you smile. And the sex, good heavens!
I just loved this book! It's excellent. Author balances the elements artfully - story, danger, romance, reality. It's very cleverly executed with some surprises.
The performance, especially our hero's accent, is swoon-worthy.
So glad I don't have to wait a year for the next one!
It seemed like this book had so much going on that it rushed passed! I enjoyed the character development - people are not static in this story. They are perfectly imperfect and they grow. An excellent addition to the series.
