"Great book and good reading but...."
In my opinion this is a great book and the reader does a very good job but... not everyone agrees with me..so a word to the wise - Listen to the sample. ( Just click on play button below the book cover. ) The sample reading for this book is five minutes long but...the first minute of the sample is read by an unidentified female reading Hariett Beecher Stowe's introduction to the book. The actual narration of the book by Jim Roberts starts right after that and goes for four minutes. If you are thinking of getting this book, I recommend you take the few minutes needed to listen to the sample. If that's not enough to make up your mind, click on the readers name for other samples of his reading. It always amazes me that people will download a book and then take more time than it would have to listen to the sample to write a review about how they hated the narration. It's especially important to do this in books like this ( and there are quite a few ) where reviewers seem to love it or hate it.
I happen to love the book and thought the reader was very good but....you may not...
So avoid buyer's regret by listening to the sample. Then decide with your own ears and not because of what other think.
"Flawed but Good"
Loved the book but...for audio perfectionists this may not be for you. The copyright says 1980 and the sound has some background noise common to recordings in those days. And....while I don't agree with the reviewer who "shouted" about it. ( all caps is considered shouting ) it does have a slightly hollow sound. However, in spite of the less-than-perfect sound quality, we ( my wife and I ) loved it! For one thing we I prefer American readers because for us, as Americans, British accents tend to get in the way of understanding.
And..most importantly...the reader was very good...seeming to "read with a smile." Over the years we have heard two other recordings of this book and the readers were just so very serious. This was Jane Austen's most light-hearted book and this readers voice matched the text perfectly. So our advice...listen to the sample first. If you don't mind the "old days" audio and you are an Austen fan, you'll love this reading.
"Great Book"
This is one of the world's great books and not just for it's sexual advice - which is fascinating - but for it's look at the mores and culture of an ancient civilization. Liked the reader, too. Heard other samples but they tried to give a romantic "syrupy" tone to the reading and it just doesn't fit. This book calls for a "matter of fact" rendition
and this reading does that very well. Five stars.
"Spell binder"
Andre Norton is one of the greats of Science Fiction and this, like just about everything she wrote, is a spell-binding yard with a little food for thought thrown in. Good reading, too.
"Another good set"
Another good selection of stories and, same as the 1st, well read. Looking forward to Volume 3 now.
"Riveting"
Riveting story..a bit wordy...but before radio, tv, the Internet etc. that was the norm. Nevertheless, very enthralling story. Well read, too.
"Great Selection"
I listened to these sets in the "old days" when it cost about $40 on cassettes. Glad to see these Volumes are now on Audible as some of my tapes are broken and the price is certainly right. Great selections ( all three volumes ) and very well read.
"Some of the best"
I tend to be wary of sequels because they often are not as good as the original. Happily that is not the case here. This is an outstanding collection of stories by some of the best sc-fi authors. Having many readers - all good - also helps. Five stars!
"Engaging"
Very captivating story. Good narration as well.
"Good yarn"
Marion Zimmer Bradley was one of my favorite authors when I was younger but somehow I missed this one.
Good yarn. In my opinion, the reader did a very good job. Don't really understand why he was trashed so badly but another reviewer.
"Wonderful rendition"
The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favorite books so I made sure I listened to the samples of all the
unabridged versions before deciding.
I chose this one and am glad I did. The reading is wonderful as befits a timeless masterpiece like this. Five stars!
