"Wow."
Edge of seat.
Author injected humor at most suspenseful fimes. The Husband is
Identifying the hostage with the captur. Author did an excellent job making the phsycological relation intense and spell binding.
I recommend thisbook. Narrator was terrible. Sounded like a bad William Shatner impression. Was.... a... little... difficult...at... times... to ....listen...to...
"Phenomenal Story!!"
It read like a treasure map. The narrator took me from one exciting point to the next and I was addicted. SciFi yes; but, it was so expertly written and narrated that I easily overlooked that fact.
I can't release any information without first offering a -spoiler alert-. Therefore, I politely recommend you add this to your library post haste. It was such an addicting story that I not only listened to it during my normal work commute but I had to keep listening for hours when I was home for the day. I even had my ear buds in during my daughter's soccer game, that's how phenomenal this story was. I couldn't wait to learn the next surprise and the next and the next.
"Phenomenal Reading From Start to Finish"
Great narrators. You'll love and hate the characters as they drag you step-by-step through the maze of psychological torment and despair. The way the author pulled the pieces together for the final reveal in the last hour was wonderful.
Gillian Flynn; you've gained a new fan!
"Blah, bland and disappointed."
This novel seemed more about the main character and her view of her children then it did the kidnapper or her relationship with him. It lacked the suspense, excitement and poignant detail that I desired. Flashbacks of the kidnapping were mundane. The start of many chapters noted a song; it's ranking on the Billboard listing and its release year. This little fact had almost nothing to do w/ the story. Spoiler Alert:.....presumably the main character can't listen to any of these songs any longer as they remind her of a certain negative time in her life... It took me until the last 30 minutes or so to drag that out of the author. When it was revealed I was very disappointed.
I desired much more from the Trudy Tackett character. I hoped the plot would have turned and she would have been a force to contend with. But, nooooo. I desired more from the finale with Walter. But, nooooo. I frankly desired more from learning what transpired during her weeks in captivity. But, noooo.
This novel really fell flat, not worth requesting a credit reimbursement and not worth my time either.
"Not as Dark As I Thought"
Good story. Flash backs were well paced. I didn't want to stop listening because I needed to know what happened next for the Days. Of course you never expect the killer to be who the author reveals in the end. However, of all the choices presented in the story, the reveal was anticlimactic. The Murder Club geek seemed to hitchhike into this story and that entire plot line could have been written out. I'm not sure what he added. I would have written -Libby Day: get off your lazy butt and go investigate- [That's why I'm not getting paid for anything I write]. All-in-all, yes it was time well spent and worth my precious credit but middle of the road 3-stars is a good place for it. The writer kept me interested as the character scenarios evolved. 4-stars on performance as there were multiple good narrators. I'd recommend it as something different in between great thrillers or very dark mysteries. I say that because there is a lot happening with these characters and all the while, it was still easy listening and not though provoking.I am willing to give Gillian Flynn another credit and see what else she can do.
"Someone Should Have Stopped E L James 1 Novel Ago"
The author could have closed out the dark side of Mr. Gray in novel #2. This went on way to long. There was some family history. Of course, sex. However, after 2 full novels of "mommy porn" I wanted to beat my self in the head w/ the book. It was terrible. I only read the entire story to get my money's worth and regretfully what I can never get back is my time.
Something entirely different. I am going to try 'The Road'.
Great performance, in par with books 1 and 2.
Extreme disappointment. Read like a story written to satisfy a contractual agreement of having to have 3 books in a series.
A good skipper. Move along to something more worthy of your time.
"Love story depicts softer side of erotic tastes."
This novel is difficult to place in a ranking amongst previous audiobooks as it's in a class of its own. In the erotic category it is actually much, much softer than anticipated. The growth potential of the characters is what intrigues and motivates me to listen to more.
As I do not see myself listening to only erotica and I am uncertain of other E L James' works, I can not determine if I would listen to other books at this juncture. It's an interesting cross-road in which I find myself.
Her character's voice depicted a young unaffected simplicity that worked very well in this novel.
The blossoming love story that is the heart of the novel lightens the pretense of what could be a dark world of dominance and submission. However, there were no extreme high or lows in this novel. I was not as moved or shocked as I would have liked. The only climax toward the end was the realization that E L James hooked me into needing to read book 2 in order to quench my desire to learn more about Mr. Grey.
"Great Read"
Top of my short list.
Sure did. Would listen to usual 2-hrs for work commute. When I got home late at night, I found myself putting off some responsibilities to hear another 2 hours. Characters are-a-plenty but you keep wanting to hear more about each. Then you start drawing your own conclusions and keep finding their wrong. Couldn't get enough of the writer's next words.
It's hard to imagine the towns in the same fashion as I could had the setting been in the U.S., but Mr. Vance did a great job bouncing back and forth between character voices and his pitch was in tune with the scene. His accent kept me focused on the foreign aspect and it worked well. Had I read the book, I would have invented my own version of the Swedish names; it was nice to have them read with correct pronunciation.
Can't say without inserting a spoiler-alert. I guess when I learned some of the Vanger family secrets.
I started with user reviews. I highly recommend the user review entitled
"Great plot, plethora of details drag on"
After 21 hours I expected at least a 45 minute finale. It was rushed. Anticlimactic. Lacking.
Susan. I felt her passion and hysteria.
Part 1 of 3. Settle in for a long haul.
Narriator slurs. Did a mediocre job portraying women in pain or angst. The story kept me listening. This is the first book I utilized the fast forward feature on my MP3. Typical Koontz satire kept me smiling.
"Never guessed the twist"
So, my secret's out, I'm new to books. Yes, read in college and on all palm tree, sun basking vacations. But, now that I'm an 80 hour/week executive that travels a lot, I have wandered into Harlan Coben. He peaked me, perked me and shocked me. I'm his newest virgin fan. The plot twisted and turned. Similar to many books others have experienced I'm sure but, this one, well, I'm pleasantly satisfied.
The natural evolution of one's imagination will run into a multitude of directions in order to crack the case and prove oneself smarter than the writer. Every time I thought I guessed the plot, or had one up on the author's course, I was shocked to find myself at the edge of my car seat for another fantastic change of events in the story line.
This novel, complete with it's multitude of climaxes left me smiling. Satisfied so much that yes, I will enjoy another Coben experience on my way to work tomorrow. However, I'm not sure it can top the quality of characters or the final lawyer twist this novel threw at me this evening.
Thank you Mr. Coben, thank you very much.
