I listened to this book a long time ago, but still hold it up as one of the most gripping I've heard. This is due, not only to Coupland's quirky and compelling writing, but to the astonishing performances by each of the readers. The last "movement" of the novel moved me to tears.
Wow. What an amazing accomplishment. A mesmerizing book read by one of the most dynamic readers I?ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. I actually went through withdrawal when it was finished!! This book has a great deal of heart and an amazing (and addictive) epic quality that makes it difficult to put down. The story twists and turns like a mountain road. Along the way you get to travel (both physically and metaphysically) and even learn a thing or two.
This book stays with you long after after you've turned your MP3 player off........
I have to confess that I purchased this book based on its funky postmodern cover..... It took me a while to get used to reader Anna Fields voice (which initially I found a little dry) but after about 30 minutes I was hooked and I really began to enjoy the intelligence and depth she brought to the reading.
My Year of Meats is:
part documentary on paper,
part exploration of cultural difference and intersection,
and fully an emotionally engaging tale of one womans journey for truth(s) both professional and personal.
I highly recommend this novel.
