The Real Purpose of Parenting is a series of stories and life lessons from the world of a therapist, known as The Parent Coach. Very well-intentioned, well meaning parents are at the point of crisis with their kids because their own best parenting efforts are NOT producing the children they want them to be. And there, according to Dr. Phil Dembo, lies the problem. Dr. Dembo shows simple family “turn around” strategies that reframe the real purpose of parenting and gives each family, and child, their own salvation.

Would you try another book from Dr. Phillip B Dembo and/or Dr. Phillip B Dembo?

    Nope

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not a book on parenting by a self important expert. By the way, if you are a parent, you are as much an expert as any other and THE expert on your child.

How could the performance have been better?

    Don't condescend to the listener.

    Any additional comments?

I expected to learn something novel or unique from this book, but like a playground mothers group it is didactic and judgemental.

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil.

This is a beautifully written story with rich and complex characters and settings read woefully by a narrator who read without feel or inflection in the first half of the book. The narrator seemed bored in the first half, and may as well have been reading a shopping list it was done with such dreariness. So many narrators could have done far more justice to this book. I do hope the author requests a re-read with a narrator who is more interested in the book than this one was.

I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he's a mystery. But to me . . . he's one of us.
