"In serious need of an editor"
It's not that the book itself is overly wordy, but that the story has too many "chance" occurrences that it destroys the suspension of disbelief. The individual vignettes range from good to excellent, but the insertion of the narrator into the compilation is ham-handed and distracting. This may be intentional - first-time or amateur historians ofter make this mistake, but an editor would have hopefully hammered this narrative into something recognizable without being distracting. There are going to be inevitable comparisons to World War Z because of the similar narrative structure, and how well Z did it.
"Agent to the Stars is a fun and fantastic read."
John, Wil - Congratulations to both of you. The audiobook version of Agent to the Stars is one of the best audiobooks I've ever had the pleasure to listen to, out of several hundred, including the Hunger Games & the Harry Potter series. Agent is a fun, breezy tale that's entirely plausible in its non-threatening first contact, and Wil nails the protagonist and other voices in the book.
