The setting is Hong Kong, 1963. The action spans scarcely more than a week, but these are the days of high adventure, from kidnapping and murder to financial double-dealing and natural catastrophes: fire, flood, and landslide. Yet they are days filled as well with all the mystery and romance of Hong Kong, the heart of Asia, rich in every trade: money, flesh, opium, power.

I've read this book four or five times in the past twenty years and it's always been a favorite. I was initially reluctant to buy the audible version, wondering if it'd somehow diminish the story's wonderful flavor, complexity and character. But in the end, it was fabulous. John Lee's narration of this magnificent novel was nothing short of brilliant.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

In 1988, 43-year-old Jeff Winston died of a heart attack. But then he awoke, and it was 1963; Jeff was 18 all over again, his memory of the next two decades intact. This time around, Jeff would gain all the power and wealth he never had before. This time around he'd know how to do it right. Until next time.

If you could sum up Replay in three words, what would they be?

Some compare this book to the movie Ground Hog Day but in my view that's not on target. While the two stories share an idea, Replay is far more compelling because the story involves lifetimes, not just one particular day. Because of that, the characters' struggles with absolute loss is overwhelming.

I share a previous reviewer's opinion about the narrator. At first, I wasn't sure I liked his style and voice but very quickly realized that he melded into the story and became the voice of the story's protagonist. Very good job.

These are true stories from the highways and byways of America. These first-hand accounts are as varied as the storytellers themselves—some are detailed and filled with the terror and suspense that made people feel they had to share what happened to them with others; others are brief and straightforward retellings of truly chilling events.

What didn’t you like about Tavia Gilbert and Peter Ganim ’s performance?

    Any additional comments?

In my opinion, this is just a collection of I-hope-you-believe-me stories, some first-hand and some third-hand, that seemed as if they were written for a junior high-school English class assignment; not particularly compelling, relatively shallow and certainly predictable. In fairness, perhaps that's just how such oral "histories" sound; brief, unembellished and absent much context. Anyway, in my view, most of the stories fell in the "I had a weird feeling one time" category that left me wondering why I was listening. As to the alien-abduction memoirs, well, I have to admit that I stopped listening to the book altogether after the first one...

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

    Any additional comments?

I'd never heard of the Outlander series despite the fact that it's been around for a while (it started in the early 90's). I only purchased the books based on audible members' near-universal raving praise.

That praise is dead-on. It's a beautiful love story and a rousing adventure with humor, tragedy, villains and heroes. Moreover, the narrator was born for this series; she's one of the best I've ever heard.

I've spent the last five months listening to all eight volumes; just finished last week and can't wait for the next volume (I understand the author is working on it for release in late 2013 - my hope is that the narrator will do this new one, too.)

Start with Outlander and then listen to the sequel. You will be hooked.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely compelling, great plots, subplots, characters, story, etc. Excellent narration, too. Be sure to listen to the prequel (Pandora's Star), otherwise you'll be a bit challenged.

"Intelligent, thoughtful, exciting - a great listen"
    Overall

I can't figure out if Kate Reading's superb narration made this audiobook so compelling or if it was just a terrific story - probably a little of both. The story takes a little while to get going but, once hooked, there's no way you're going to put down this book until the end. You simply care about the characters too much. Well done, author and narrator!

A mysterious alien presence unexpectedly bursts out of sacred sites all over the world and begins to rip human souls from their bodies, plunging the world into a chaos it has never before known. Courage meets cowardice; loyalty meets betrayal as an entire world struggles to survive this incredible end-all war. Heroes emerge, villains reveal themselves, and in the end, something completely new and unexpected happens that at once lifts the fictional characters into a new life and sounds a haunting real-world warning for the future.

Think about every paranormal, alien-invasion, parallel universe, time-warp and supernatural story you've ever heard. Dump them all into a mixer and set the machine's dial to "liquify." That's this book. Previous reviewers' use of the word "disjointed" was exceedingly kind.

In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Laura says: "Repetitive, but still enjoyable"
"One of the best audible books ever"

You care about the characters, the heros are very good, the villains are very bad and John Lee is one of the world's best readers. Buy this audible book!
