"Patterson has lost his touch-HUGE dissappointment"
I used to be a huge Patterson fan. His earlier Alex Cross novels were fun, engaging listens. The last three or four books (Big Bad Wolf going forward) have been going down hill and this was a HUGE disappointment. I keep hoping Patterson will go back to what made him great, but I just don't think it's going to happen. It saddens me, but I think I am done with Alex Cross novels.
"Wish I read the reviews before I wasted a credit"
I am a huge Judy Picoult fan, but I honestly do not think I can even finish this book. The writing is choppy. The characters are not developed in the way I expect from this author. At first, I thought it was just the narrator, but no...it is is everything together. I am very disappointed.
"One of my all time favorite listens!!!"
I resisted buying this book forever. Too much hype because of the movie, not really my prefered genre...
I fell in love with this book within the first few sentences. I am hard-pressed to recall a book that surpasses the narration. As someone said earlier, I did not feel like someone was narrating a book, I felt like a friend was sittng on the edge of my bed telling me the story of her life. I laughed, I cried...I got down right pissed off.
I did not realize this was Ms. Stockett's first novel. She is going to be her own tough act to follow!!! I am almost afraid to see the movie because I will be upset if it does not do the book justice.
I LOVED this book!!!
"I simple enjoyed this book"
There were no surprising plot twists. This was a plain, simple story that I could have outlined before I stared listening. And yet, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I kept thinking, I know what's going to happen next...and it did...and yet I hated to leave the story behnd in my car when I got to my destination. The characters were developed nicely and the story was well-told. I have loved Judith Light since I was young and she was in the soaps. I think she did a fabulous job narrating this. I am a fan of Jennifer Weiner's work and this further solidified my like of her work!!!
"It was OK"
Longtime Baldacci fan. this is obviously a departure from his regular fare. It wasn't the best or the worst I've heard.
"I am DONE with James Patterson"
I used to love his stuff. Over the last few years it has gotten harder and harder to get through his stuff (alone or as a co-author). The story line and its twists were over the top. The narrator was terrible. I agree with other reviews she overacted everything, sounded like a high schooler and made every character sound the same. The cheesy music...seriously...what were they thinking. I keep trying his stuff again thinking it will go back to the quality of his OLD Cross novels...but no such luck...it makes me sad.
"I really tried to like it, but..."
This was not one of my favorites of Judy Picoult's. I am usually a fan, but this one lacked the twists and surprise endings. However, the WORST things were the musical interludes. I didn't have a problem with the songs or even the concept, but the female vocalist was absolutely atrocious.
"Who'd have thought I'd like nonfiction"
What everyone else said is true, this is an excellent book. I do not listen to non-fiction, but my husband raved about the book. I read the reviews here and decided to take a chance. Glad I did. I was a kid when MLK was assasinated. I learned a lot about him and the event. And the story was masterfully told. I even enjoyed the narrator. Sometimes the author should leave narrating to the professionsal. But Mr. Sides did a nice job.
"REALLY bad female narrator"
I have to agree with other comments...the female narrator was SO distracting I almost couldn't finish the stories she narrated. She narrated strong female characters and made them sound like whiny mousy kids. For that matter, she made the male characters sound like whiny mousy kids. I liked the stories and did not mind the commonality of the themes. Stephen King nice work...chose your readers better next time
"Not the Picoult ending/twist I wanted"
I LOVE this author and this was a good listen (particularly on the issue of autism and families dealing with it)...but was disappointed for one thing....I knew what had happened SOOO early on and I kept waiting for what I thought would be the typical Picoult kick you in the teeth unexpected ending twist...nothing. She ended this book the way the movie My Sister's Keeper RUINED Picoult's real (jaw dropping) ending.
