I wish to book had been less like a greeting card!
It reminds me of the Marion Crawford book, "The Little Princesses", in its saccharine infused prose. A biography of Mother Teresa would have been less gooey! I wanted a more three dimensional view of Almina, instead we are given treacle coated view!
Most interesting: Almina's drive. Least interesting: the superficial treatment of very complex personal relationships.
Probably in hopes of a screen writer who was less protective than the author!
I'm not sure I will be able to listen to the entire book due to the poor performance of the author/reader. She ought to stick to writing and allow a professional to narrate. Reisen might be tolerable for a 15 min reading at a book signing but NOT for 12 hours. Very disappointed as I adore Alcott and had looked forward to listening.
It changes nothing
The yearning of Omar Bin Laden when he describes his childhood and the relationship with his father touched me. As an adult, the yearning for a father persists despite his ability to look at and judge his father with suprising objectivity.
The performance was good overall but there were times when I felt as ifI was listening to italics and could not determine if they were the author's or the narrator's
Best Medical History
The juxtaposition of the scientific evolution and the human condition predicated by the Influenza pandemic and its ongoing impact for the world at risk of a similar pandemic today.
I was very moved by the personal experiences of the men, and few women, of the scientific community which run through the entire book. .
I think this book is a must read (must listen) for anyone in the medical community, anyone interested in the social and political impact of disease, or anyone with a passion for history. Beautifully written and narrated, I listened during any moment I had available. Highly recommended!
