  • A Great and Terrible Beauty

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Libba Bray
    • Narrated By Josephine Bailey

It's 1895, and after the suicide of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in India to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma's reception there is a chilly one.

    Beverly says: "More Details, please!"
    "Not Harry Potter but.."

Actually very enjoyable if you can get past the fact the heroine is far to normal to be completely likable, she gets better after the first few chapters. The plot is interesting enough and if some listeners found it boring I think that is most likely because the characters are written like everyday people, even though there is the fantasy of the "Realms". It's not as fast moving as other teenage magic books, nor are the characters as noble, but it has an air of reality in it that sets it apart.

  • Twilight: The Twilight Saga, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Stephenie Meyer
    • Narrated By Ilyana Kadushin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

About three things I was certain. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him, and I didn't know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Bryan J. Peterson says: "A waste of my time this wasn't."
    "A bad beginning....BUT great series"

Twilight was not good. I read other people's reviews that warned of how the entire book was about how Edward was too beautiful and far too good for Bella, the fairly corny I vant-to-suck-your-blood scenes, and yet I purchased this book and the next in the series, New Moon, because I had a very long car drive ahead of me and overall the book has great reviews. It is SO HARD to listen to 15 hours of how beautiful and unhuman Edward is, not very entertaining at all, however with nothing better to do on my trip I started New Moon as well, that one is so much better! Finally Bella seems to become a real person as the authors talent seems to mature. The rest of the series is great. I'm writing this review to anyone who bought or buys the first book and is totally disgusted to let you know it does get better, MUCH BETTER! I'm a 29 year old mother who's favorite book series are the Outlander seriers, and yes Harry Potter, if this gives you any insight of if this review would match your taste at all:)

  • Devil's Cub

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Georgette Heyer
    • Narrated By Michael Drew

The excesses of the young Marquis of Vidal are even wilder than his father's before him. Not for nothing is the reckless duellist and gamester called "the Devil's Cub". But when he is forced to leave the country, Mary Challoner discovers his fiendish plan to abduct her sister. Any only by daring to impersonate her can Mary save her sibling from certain ruin.

Janet says: "Lovely book but narrator missed the mark"
    "Nothing out of the ordinary"

After seeing all the good reviews on this book I had hoped I'd be in for a treat, I was sadly dissapionted. The characters were all disagreeable and unrealistic. The women were all silly, constantly getting "the vapors" or going into hysterics, other than the main character who was so straight laced that she was dull. The relationships had no foundation, you never got to see the people fall in love, they talked to each other very little and thought they disliked each other until that magical moment when they realized they were in love.
The narrarator has a great talent for doing voices, but the ones he picked were all wrong for the characters. The 24 year old leading man was extremely nasal and sounded about 75. The people who had accents were very difficult to understand.
Even for this genre of book this was saldy lacking, if you want to read an incredible romance get Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, it is amazing!
