No wonder it's so hard to lose weight, our bodies are designed to keep weight on at all costs; it's a matter of survival. It's embedded in our DNA. Our diet has changed dramatically over the past ten thousand years, but our genetic blueprint has not, our bodies are not designed to process the types of food we are fed today.

I am glad I listened to this book. Although there are no ground breaking findings in it - it would be difficult to say anything new about food - the connections the author makes are very interesting. There are many examples of how certain food influences our health and weight, that are so obvious when you hear it, yet they never occurrent to me before. Credits worth spend on this one.

  • The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined

We’ve all had the experience of reading about a bloody war or shocking crime and asking, “What is the world coming to?” But we seldom ask, “How bad was the world in the past?” In this startling new book, the best-selling cognitive scientist Steven Pinker shows that the world of the past was much worse. In fact, we may be living in the most peaceable era in our species’ existence.

Mislead by the title, I bought the book to understand the violence' place in human nature, but quit listening to it after ten hours of detailed descriptions of everything extremely brutal and savage in history, real or imagined. In the beginning I thought that these stories are meant to illustrate that the human history has been violent, more so than the time's we're living in, but after ten hours of this I think this is the only content of the book. Blood and suffering everywhere, described too vividly to my liking - I don't know who can enjoy, or even stand that for hours and hours in a row.

Greed is the story of Kurt Janisch, an ambitious but frustrated country policeman, and the lonely women he seduces. It is a thriller set amid the mountains and small towns of southern Austria, where the investigation of a dead girl's body in a lake leads to the discovery of more than a single crime. In her signature style, Jelinek chronicles the exploitative nature of relations between men and women, and the cruelties of everyday life.

    Story
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I listen to my books while doing something else, but this book is not made for that. The story is written in an unusual way, that requires high concentration while listening. I was lost just after few sentences, it did get better later on but I still believe this book is made for reading not listening.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Surprise surprise, it's a story about greed - specifically about very, very greedy people doing bad things trying to accumulate the wealth other, weaker people have collected. It's heavy, dark and sad story really. I stopped listening after one hour, having no intention to finish this book any more.

  • Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think

In this illuminating and groundbreaking new book, food psychologist Brian Wansink shows why you may not realize how much you're eating, what you're eating, or why you're even eating at all.

    Jim says: "Mindless Reading"
    "Very funny and interesting"
    Overall

What you will not find in this book is advice how to eat and diet better. What you will find are examples - supported by several studies - how people choose their food. It's really astonishing how details influence what and how much we eat. Knowing that, one could choose the meals better, provided we always think before we choose.
