  • Endymion

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Dan Simmons
    • Narrated By Victor Bevine
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Here, Simmons returns to this richly imagined world of technological achievement, excitement, wonder and fear. Endymion is a story about love and memory, triumph and terror - an instant candidate for the field's highest honors.

"Read Them All, Beginning with Hyperion"

Why pay more to listen to 10 hour books when you can listen to some of the best science fiction for twice as long and completely become emersed into a new world and become friends with some of the most interesting characters in fiction.

Science Fiction at it's best I feel, From the first book to the last! These books do not stand alone. Hyperion is a Space Opera of epic proportions, so be prepared to enjoy.

Oh, and if you like easy reading, dislike stories that require you to think deep thoughts, then this is not for you. This is for the creative mind, the thinking mind, and for the true Science Fiction fan.

I've one book left to read and I'm out of credits for the month. For the first time I'm considering paying above my monthly membership credits rather then wait for next month's credits.

    Now that's saying something!

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By James Wesley Rawles

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

    Hugh says: "Accidentally Good"
"This is a triumphant story of survival..."
Where does Patriots rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd rank this as a top 20% book on my list of "reads". Any book that I listened to daily whenever I'd get the chance, and finish in less then a week's time, is a great read as far as I'm concerned.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

There were times that this book keep on the edge of my seat. I found myself not wanting to pull the ear bud out of my ear when real life needed tending to, that's for sure.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Dick gives the characters personality, and easily leads you from one harrowing scene to another.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Second American Civil War, Are You Prepared?

    Any additional comments?

This book presents us with a possible look at the not to distant future of the United States and how a band of friends who had the for site to prepare in advance for such a future, and how doing so gave them an edge when dealing with this new terrifying world they found themselves in.

  • Middlesex

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By Jeffrey Eugenides
    • Narrated By Kristoffer Tabori

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

Christopher Allen walker says: "Great Pulitzer Winning novel!"
    "Worth Waiting It Out"

I began listening to the book and about 15 minutes into it I was kicking myself for downloading a bummer of a book.

I thought I had erased it from my reader, but discovered it was still there one day when another book I'd been listening to was over. I was out and about and had nothing else to do so I listened to this one.... and another 30 minutes later I found it starting to grow on me.

That means it took nearly 45 minutes to get into this book, but once I did, I never looked back. I listened to the rest over the next couple of days, not wanting to take off the headphones unless I had to.

If you'd have asked me during the first 30 minutes, I'd have given you a rating of 2. AS it is I give it a rating of 4 and was glad I waited it out.

  • The Help

    • UNABRIDGED (18 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Kathryn Stockett
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "Riviting and Educating"

At the top of my list of annoyances in life is spending good money on a book that I end up not enjoying. This means I spend a lot of time agonizing over the books I do download, reading reviews and surfing the net for top 10 books lists.

Help was a good one that kept me listening. The main characters are well rounded and believable. The multiple narrators helped to keep the women's stories apart, and told a riveting tale of three women who's lives became intertwined during a turbulent time. The story takes place in the early days of the Civil Rights movement and involve three brave women, one white and two blacks, who, despite grave danger to themselves, come together to do their part in helping to right the wrongs infliced upon black domestics by their white employers.

A good book, worth the download!

  • Spin

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Robert Charles Wilson
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

One night when he was 10, Tyler stood in his backyard and watched the stars go out. They flared into brilliance, then disappeared, replaced by an empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives.

    Robert says: "A Classic"
    "A Winner"

I search the net for forums and top book lists to try to find something to download that is not going to disappoint me. I'm not always satisified, but with Spin I hit a winner. I very much enjoyed it, to the point that the TV did not come on all night. Instead I sat for hours just listening to this book. If you like well thought out Science fiction without a lot of sexual scenes thrown in, then this is a great book to listen to.
