For the first 30 minutes or so I was pretty worried that this was going to be very dry and disappointing. After getting into it, however, I found that it was extremely informative. Rather than just providing sterile facts, it really goes into the laws and history and helps the listener understand what contributed to creating the environment that the Hemingses lived in. I would highly recommend this book.
I was surprised after listening to this when I read the reviews that were so harsh on the narration. I think Mr. Welliver did a pretty solid job and his voice lent The Burning Room a Dragnet feel to it that I really enjoyed. To me he has the perfect voice for this genre. I would recommend this book.
I have a ton of books in my library and have enjoyed most of them, but this book was special. The story telling was fantastic and it has that nostalgic feel of books like To Kill a Mockingbird. I highly recommend this book, it is simply fabulous.
I wasn't really feeling this at first and bought it strictly because Robert McCammon is one of my favorite authors. After an hour or 2 I nearly game up, but I'm glad I didn't. I would absolutely recommend this book, it is well written with great characters.
I lasted about 2 hours and had to abandon this one. I didn't care for the narration, the way the story jumped around, or the writing style. Instead of writing, for instance:
He thought back to last Tuesday, when he had spent the day hanging out with friends.
She writes like:
He remembered last Tuesday. "I spent the day hanging out with friends and had a great time", he thought.
I probably didn't do a very good job of explaining that, but if you listen you will understand what I mean and may find it as annoying as I did.
Obviously I am the one-off as everyone else seemed to enjoy it, so take this for what it's worth.
I loved this book. I was really disappointed when I learned that Will Patton would not be narrating this one, but I thought that David Morse did a very good job. Well worth the wait and the credit.
This was a great listen and well worth the price. Great storyline, great characters and great narration.
If the mysteries had any mystery behind them. The stories were okay, but maybe the focus should have been on fewer but more robust stories.
Not one of these collections.
The narrators were okay, the stories just lacked teeth.
I would have cut the quantity of stories in half.
I haven't read the print version, but I laughed when I read Kelly Howard's review after I finished it because I kept thinking Rodney Dangerfield too. I also felt that the reader didn't pause enough between chapters and scenes and it really left me unbalanced at times.
It was a new twist on the Dracula story and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Dan Simmons is one of my new favorite authors.
Worth the wait. The first half hour or so frustrated me, but it all sorted itself out and it turned out to be a pretty good book. Well worth what I paid for it.
The ending was surprising and it left me wanting more.
I would recommend it. It was a good story with great characters. Like most, I didn't particularly care for the ending as it kind of left some unanswered questions, but it was well worth the credit.
I liked all of them but Casey Holloway, she sounded robotic.
