Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd reccomend this book to lovers of history or the mechanically or technically inclined. If you're a combination of the two, this book will be very much right up your alley. It affords an entertaining way to expand upon both historical and technical knowledge.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Most Powerful Idea in the World?

A summing up of the book's premise via a historical Abraham Lincoln speech at the end of the epilogue.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There wasn't really one in particular, though describing Coke's marriage as the worst decision of his life does jump to mind.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not particularly, this one lent itself to episodic listening quite well, as it is mostly pretty interesting, but isn't really plot driven in any significant sense.

    Any additional comments?

The occasional authors notes tended to be a nice little bonus.

Throughout human history, certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period. A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it provides insights into the sweep of history that I never managed to absorb in high school history class, while at the same time providing interesting history and trivia on the beverages themselves.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Beer, but then I am biased. On the other hand, I found the section on beer to be one of the least compelling personally, but I believe this is primarily because I already knew much of the information provided on beer, while I'm a relative novice on the other five beverages.

What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration was decent but nothing to write home about. The strength of the audio format was in helping to wade through the initial pages. The book starts out fairly dry, and I would have had a harder time continuing had I been reading rather than being read to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really, but it was enjoyable in chunks.

    Any additional comments?

I you like history and beverages, this is a slam dunk. If you like one or the other, probably still worth giving this one a go.

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

What did you love best about Unbroken?

Unbroken moved me to tears on numerous occasions thoughout the book, which is not at all typical of an audiobook experience for me. Powerful story, powerfully written, pitch perfect narration.

What other book might you compare Unbroken to and why?

This book really isn't comparable to anything else I've read or listened to. Non-fiction that unfolds like a dramatic novel, and gets away with implausibility that would be preposterous in fiction because the events actually happened.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The track races were told as if you we watching them live, really top notch.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't want to stop listening, but doing so was probably for the best. It would be too emotionally exhausting all in one shot.

    Any additional comments?

I strongly suggest you listen to this book.
