After escaping from the dark and dismal workhouse where he was born, Oliver finds himself on the mean streets of Victorian-era London and is unwittingly recruited into a scabrous gang of scheming urchins. In this band of petty thieves, Oliver encounters the extraordinary and vibrant characters who have captured audiences' imaginations for more than 150 years.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I think most have read this, but it was one I'd neglected, and am so glad that audiobooks allow me to "catch up" on the things I've missed, but don't have time to sit down and enjoy.

Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?

Simon Vance is a stellar narrator, bringing stories to life w/ his flawless transitions between characters. What a pro! His narration made this story for me.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it's nothing more than a tragic hunting accident, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods.

First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

What about Charlton Griffin’s performance did you like?

    Great narrator.

    Any additional comments?

Enjoyed these stories, and was amused. I'd never read Sherlock Holmes, and hadn't realized the humor within. Very entertaining. I'm glad the two-for-one deal on classics encouraged me to purchase this one.

What did you love best about Silver Wattle?

It's been a while since I listened, so I don't have the vivid memory of it I'd like to while reviewing. I did enjoy the book, however.

I appreciated its twists and turns, thoughtful reflection, and interesting background regarding the film industry.

Have you listened to any of Caroline Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Caroline Lee is one of my favorite readers. In fact, the reason I selected this book in the first place was because she'd be narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Holy cow...the reading was just terrible. I expect a few errors here and there, but these mistakes were too many, and of too many varieties to excuse. Words were mispronounced, punctuation was ignored, inflections were inappropriate, characters' lines were read in the voice of others, verb tense were changed, and words were omitted or inserted, changing the entire meaning of some lines. "Not" is a very important word!'

I was able to understand what was intended, but this was NOT the performance of a talented reader. His error "coverups" were ineffective and his reading was a distraction from the story itself.

This was a total waste of my money. I listened to the end only because I felt obligated, having paid for it. Blech.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No. The author was trying too hard. I'll not be reading any of the rest of the series.

    Any additional comments?

I want my money back. :)
