This was a very enjoyable listen. It's nice to get a somewhat fresh look on the whole apocalyptic genre and especially one without zombies and emps. This reminded me a lot of Lucifers Hammer but much quicker paced. The ending wrapped it up nicely, I don't know if there's plans on a sequel or not, there certainly could be one but it absolutely would not be needed either.
Ok so overall this was a decent installment of the series and it did keep me entertained but i was annoyed by a few things. First he overused the word normal in this book way too much, the book was short to begin with and if the word normal was removed it would shave off another 20 minutes or so. Second is his wife, she is just a hateable person and I find it hard to beleive a doctor would act the way she did. Lastly, and I'll try to explain this without giving anything important away, grant does something in this book that I don't think any good parent would do and that almost makes me not like him.
Ok one more annoying thing, grant and his team got badges made for their concealed weapons permit, there are many reasons why this is a bad idea and the people who normally do this are the "mall ninjas" he refers to often, or the wanna be law enforcers.
Ok one more thing, this is supposed to be a beleivable societal collapse story but he has some mysterious "outside thought" guiding him like dexters dad. At first it didn't bother me because I assumed it was his intuition but I think it's gone slightly beyond that now.
Anyway I'll buy the third and give it a listen. It is an entertaining series so far and there's some good info in it.
I really liked this book, it was written in journal format which makes it feel more personal I guess. Either way I do enjoy listening to this style. My only complaint is it really isn't a complete boot, it just stops and then the story picks up in the second installment. That's not the end of the world because right now the second book is available so I just finished that as well and no suprise it just ended mid plot line as well, and the 3rd book is not currently available. My advice would be to wait until all 3 are available.
This was a great listen, I've listened to so many different zombie books and a lot are very similar but this one sets itself apart from the others in a number of ways. First the zombies aren't the usual living dead though they act about the same but in a more believable way. Second, they go out on a boat instead of the normal drift across the land story that I'm used to. I'm currently about 30 minutes from finishing it, I just bought the second installment so I can listen to it when this is done. If I had to find any fault with it I'd say the 13 yr old daughter may be a bit far fetched in her abilities and knowledge of weapons and such but I suppose it's just as possible as a zombie apocalypse.
I was excited to listen to this after reading some of the reviews saying that it was realistic and terrifying. Another thing that was mentioned was that it had a bad ending so I kept anticipating and trying to predict how badly it was going to end and I was way off with my prediction. I will say the ending wasn't as bad as I was expecting and it did give me with a sense of resolution, I would have liked it to be much longer though as it was wrapped up rather quicky. There was a very unique method one couple did to stay alive, I won't spoil it but it was truly unique, I've listened to most other apocalyptic and PA books out there and never heard this.
All in all it was a good listen and if you're like me and have been through all the really good books in this genre then definitely listen to this one.
I thought this first part was pretty good and it was free so it's hard to complain really. It's a zombie story, there's better ones out there and there's way worse, if you're like me you've already been through all the good ones and most of the bad ones.
Here's my issue with it, it's 2 hours, maybe less because they give a review of the second part in it too. There's no conclusion in that first part so basically they give us a few chapters for free and the next one is 3 hours for 5 dollars and they get progressively longer and more expensive so basically they split up maybe 2 books, 3 at the most, into a bunch of parts so it ends up being expensive and it's not feasible to use a credit unless it's one of the last ones. I will probably purchase the second one to see how it is.
Ok so I originally bought this book a long time ago on iTunes and really liked it but I didn't back up my phone and it got deleted and iTunes doesn't let you re download it( I'll never buy another from iTunes), I seen it come up as the daily deal for a couple bucks and picked it up again, I rarely re listen to a book but since it's been a while I did. What a great zombie book this was, I wish there were more this good. Unfortunately the second book was also lost on iTunes so I'll have to wait until it goes on sale as I recall it being good too.
I normally would have passed on this based on the title but I'm running out of good zombie books and this one was getting a lot of good reviews so I figured I'd give it a try. It was the story of some real life guys trying to make it through a zombie apocalypse. A lot of it had me laughing to myself and that doesn't happen too often. It wasn't too over the top like Shawn of the Dead. I'd recommend having a listen. My only complaint was the voice of the stoner guy, it seems every reader has the same stoner voice and it makes the character sound really dumb and annoying which doesn't really fit in this case.
I'm writing this review mainly because I passed over this book so many times because I just didn't think I could care about the main character enough to enjoy the story. Luckily while he is no saint and does some really unforgivable things to he author does a great job at making him interesting and maybe even somewhat like able. So don't judge this book based on the description, give it a try if you like zombies and have been through all the really good ones.
I've read just about every other post apocalyptic books out there as well as others in similar genres and as of late most have been getting a bit boring. This book and series was one of the better ones, right up there with One Second After. The main character seems quick to kill sometimes but that's probably what kept him alive. It's a very scary look into what the future could hold.
The only complaint I have and it's a minor one is when the narrator is switching between the story lines of several characters he does so so quickly it's almost hard to notice at first. There's also quite a few times you can tell parts were edited but it's really no big deal. I'm almost finished with the second one and I'll get the third when I'm done with it, the third is shorter which is a bummer.
